Aptos earns 4×800 titles; Soquel's Jack Cash, Harbor's Elise Dawson crowned pole vault champs | SCCAL Track and Field Trials
Aptos High's took first place in the 4×800 meter relay for both boys and girls, and Soquel senior Jack Cash and Harbor junior Elise Dawson won pole vault titles at the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League Track and Field Trials at Harbor High on Thursday.
The 4×800 relay and pole vault were the only events where finals were conducted. The remainder of the championships take place at Harbor on Saturday at 10 a.m.
Mariners freshman Zach Fitch, juniors Anthony Sandford-Carroll and Sam Hansen, and senior Brady Bliesner teamed up to win the boys' 4×800 relay in 8 minutes, 4.01 second. Scotts Valley (8:11.19) took second, and Santa Cruz (8:13.83) was third.
Mariners junior Kenzie Culbertson, freshman Pierce Culbertson, junior Mata Overby, and senior Maya Schiro teamed up to win the girls' 4×800 relay in 9:41.44. Scotts Valley took second in 10:03.63, and Santa Cruz scratched in the event.
Cash and Aptos junior Bryce Boudreault both cleared 12 feet in the boys' pole vault, but Cash did so in less attempts to claim the crown. Aptos sophomore Jack Hansen (11-6) took third.
Dawson cleared 8-6 in her pole vault win. Soquel junior Juliet Dunton took second (8-0), and Harbor freshman Savannah Ortega (7-6) took third.
Boys
Scotts Valley senior Anton Khomenko took first in the 100 prelims in a season-best 11.14 to edge Santa Cruz freshman Cruz Snell (11.22) and Cardinals junior Angelo Myer (11.28), both of whom turned in personal bests.
Myer turned in a personal-best 23.06 finish to take first in the 200 prelims. Scotts Valley senior Evan Wong also turned in a personal best (23.20) to take second ahead of Khomenko (23.26).
Soquel sophomore Tyler Sakkestad ran a personal-best 52.37 in the 400 prelims and finished ahead of San Lorenzo Valley junior Colton Ryssemus (52.65) and Santa Cruz junior Wyatt DuMont (53.47).
Santa Cruz senior Kaden Steele (15.91) finished ahead of Scotts Valley sophomore Aaron Wheeler (17.67) and SLV senior Isaiah Maier (17.83) in the 110 hurdles prelims.
Girls
Santa Cruz junior Joy Roberts ran a season-best 12.47 in the 100 prelims to finish ahead of Aptos sophomore Myla Appleby (12.64) and Scotts Valley freshman Linnea Hannaleck (12.68), both of whom turned in personal bests.
Scotts Valley senior Ava Decleve took first in both the 200 and 400 prelims.
She finished in 25.44 in the 200 prelims, ahead Aptos senior Ella Boyes (25.68), who turned in a personal best, and Roberts (26.04).
In the 400, Decleve (57.04) held off hard-charging Aptos junior Bella Hartnett (58.43) and Scotts Valley senior Dylan Turzak (1:01.26), both of whom turned in season bests.
