Harbor volleyball sweeps SC, celebrates first league title since 2009 | Local Roundup
Cooper Lastition, a 6-foot-4 outside hitter, shined on senior night, and Harbor High's boys volleyball team won the 2026 Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League title outright with its 25-18, 25-21, 25-22 sweep of visiting Santa Cruz in the teams' regular-season finale on Thursday.
The Pirates (29-5 overall, 12-0 league), the SCCAL runner-up the previous four seasons, broke through for their first league title since 2009.
Senior outside hitter Charlie Hess had 14 kills and six digs to lead the second-place Cardinals (21-11, 10-2), the 2025 SCCAL champion.
Senior middle blocker Guillermo Mazier had four kills and five blocks, and senior libero Lucas Kamalani made 16 digs.
"Unfortunate to not take a set off Harbor on their senior night, but both sides really played so well," Cardinals coach Peter Edwards said. "The energy in the gym was at an all-time high, with both sides making great defensive plays back and forth. Cooper was definitely the man of the match, steadily ending rallies with big swings throughout the match."
Harbor gains the No. 1 seed for the SCCAL Tournament and Santa Cruz is No. 2. Both will play in semifinals at Harbor on Tuesday, at 5 and 7 p.m. Their opponents are TBA.
Pacific Collegiate 3, Marina 0: Junior opposite Leif McKarther and senior outside hitter Son Mai-Clark paced the Pumas in their 25-21, 25-18, 25-13 sweep to clinch the PCAL Mission Division title Thursday in coach Todd Hollenbeck's first season at the helm.
It's the Pumas' first league title since they first in the SCCAL and won the CCS Division II title in 2017.
McKarther had 15 kills, nine digs, and two aces for the Pumas (11-5, 7-1), and Mai-Clark had 13 kills, four blocks and four digs. Junior setter Bohdi Partland had 32 assists and four digs, and junior outside Emmet Partland had four kills and five blocks.
PCS closes the regular season with a home match against second-place Rancho San Juan (14-10, 6-3) on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Scotts Valley 3, at Soquel 0: The Falcons, playing without their starting middle and outside hitter, earned a sweep in their SCCAL finale, 25-14, 25-16, 25-22, on Thursday.
Sophomore outside Bentley Clarkson had 13 kills, five aces, and seven digs for the Falcons (9-17, 4-8). Freshman Leo Hashiguichi Rosoff, who usually plays opposite, filled in at middle and made six kills, 12 digs, and three blocks.
Senior setter Troy Thompson had 31 assists, five digs, two kills and two blocks for th Falcons, and junior middle Ben Luckey had six kills, four digs, and two aces.
In the opening round of the SCCAL Tournament on Monday at 6 p.m., Scotts Valley will be the No. 5 seed and plays at No. 4 SLV, and No. 6 Soquel (9-20, 3-9) plays at No. 3 Mount Madonna.
High school baseball
Soquel 9, at Aptos 2: Cal State Fullerton committed senior left-hander Jake Escalante was dominant in an epic pitching matchup, and the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League leading Knights cruised and knocked the Mariners into third place Thursday.
Cal committed junior right-hander Cole McGillicuddy started for the Mariners.
Escalante gave up three hits and two runs over 6 2/3 innings while striking out 11 batters and issuing two walks.
McGillicuddy was tagged for nine hits and nine runs, only two were earned, over 5 1/3 innings. He walked three batters and struck out two.
Senior catcher Cash Moran had three hits, one RBI, and scored twice for the Knights (17-3, 9-1). Senior Trey Sousa had two hits and two RBI, and Fresno State committed infielder Hudson Summerrill, who is batting .508 through 20 games, had a hit, two RBI, and scored a run.
McGillicuddy doubled and drove in a run for the Mariners (10-7, 6-5). Alec Mendoza and Damien Espinoza each had a hit and scored a run.
On Tuesday at 4 p.m., Soquel hosts second-place Harbor (13-7, 6-4), and Aptos hosts Scotts Valley (6-13, 3-7).
High school softball
Aptos 13, at Santa Cruz 3: Junior Kalina Healy had two doubles, one RBI, and scored twice for the Mariners in their SCCAL win Thursday.
Junior Emma Burgueno had two hits and scored three runs for the league leading Mariners (17-4, 10-0). Senior Cara Allshouse had two hits and two RBI. Izzy Baker and Lanies Nunez each had a hit and two RBI. Gwen Vaca had a hit, one RBI, and scored twice. Junior Mya Najera-White hit a solo home run, her third of the season.
Ellia Dunton had two hits, including a double, two RBI, and scored a run for the Cardinals (2-13, 1-9). Rona Lewis also had two hits, and GG Padia-Espinosa and Izzy Fetke each had a hit and run scored.
On Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., Aptos plays at Harbor (2-11, 0-9), and Santa Cruz hosts Scotts Valley (6-9-1, 5-4).
Soquel 11, at Scotts Valley 0; 5 inn.: Freshman pitcher Kiyomi Dunlap threw a five-inning no-hitter and homered in the Knights' SCCAL win Thursday. She struck out six batters.
On offense, Dunlap finished with two hits and five RBI for the second-place Knights (15-5, 8-2). Freshman Sophia Kilby also homered and drove in a pair of runs.
Freshman Hailey Leimas had two hits and one RBI. Junior Emma Niizawa had one RBI and scored twice, and sophomore Ellie Howell had a hit and scored twice.
Junior Lorelei Warner drew a walk for the Falcons (6-9-1, 5-4), and Chloe Kent was hit by a pitch and stole a base.
On Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., Soquel plays at SLV (9-7-1, 5-4), and Scotts Valley plays at Santa Cruz (2-13, 1-9).
SLV 14, at Harbor 4; 6 inn.: Brooke Reed had four hits, including two doubles, two RBI, and scored three runs for the Cougars in their SCCAL win Thursday.
Bailey Filice had three hits, three RBI, and scored a run for the Cougars (9-7-1, 5-4). Grace Purtscher had three hits, two RBI, and scored a run, and Skylar Cloyd had three hits, one RBI, and scored twice. Ida Robertello had a double and triple, three RBI, and scored a run. Savanna Robertson and Audrey Jouglet each two hits, one RBI, and two runs scored.
Cloyd struck out five batters in three scoreless innings of work and picked up the win.
On Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., SLV hosts Soquel, and Harbor (2-11, 0-9) hosts Aptos (17-4, 10-0).
Hollister 15, at Watsonville 5: Senior Mia Espinoza had two hits, one RBI, and scored twice for the Wildcatz in their PCAL Gabilan Division loss Thursday.
Audrina Rodriguez had two hits and scored a run for the Wildcatz (2-15-1, 2-10). Sophomore Isabella Ruiz and junior Esperanza Sigala each had a hit and one RBI, and junior Taylor Alves and sophomore Layla Romero scored a run.
Eleven of the Haybalers' 21 hits went for extra bases. Freshman Sidney Esparza had four hits - three doubles and a triple - one RBI, and scored twice for division leading Hollister (17-5, 10-2). Senior De'zeyer Fa'agai had three hits, including a pair of home runs, three RBI, and three runs scored. Sophomore Sophia Galindo also homered twice and drove in three runs.
Junior Kaliyah Ceja picked up the win, and Amelia Martinez took the loss.
Watsonville plays at Palma (14-6, 9-3) on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Men's tennis
UC Santa Cruz 4, at Salisbury 2: Benjamin Wang, Gavin Sontag, Rocco Melendez, and Peter Liang earned singles wins in straight sets to lift the Banana Slugs to the win in Salisbury, Maryland, on Wednesday.
UCSC (10-13) plays at Mary Washington (18-6) in Fredericksburg, Virginia, on Friday at 7 a.m.
