CIF Boys Tennis team playoff results
The Stockdale and Bakersfield high school boys tennis teams each handily won their Division 1 first-round playoff matches and have advanced to Thursday's second round.
Their respective 8-1 wins moved both teams into road matches with teams who had a first-round bye. Stockdale will now play the division's No. 1 seed, Clovis North. The Drillers, meanwhile, went from hosting and defeating No. 10 Liberty to preparing to travel across town to face a familiar foe, No. 2 seed and South Yosemite Valley League counterpart Bakersfield Christian.
Meanwhile, in other divisions, both local teams playing in Division 2 will have their first match of the playoffs on Thursday. No. 3 Centennial is hosting No. 6 Sanger and the No. 1 seed, Frontier is facing either No. 8 Immanuel or No. 9 Templeton after the Titans enjoyed a Tuesday bye.
In Division 3, West advanced following a 5-4 home victory over Mission College Prep on Tuesday. The Vikings' reward for winning is a Thursday road match against No. 1 San Joaquin Memorial. In Tuesday's other match with a local team, No. 12 Wasco's team season came to a close in a 9-0 loss to No. 5 Reedley.
The Division 4 playoff bracket saw three local teams advance and two eliminated. No. 5 Independence took care of No. 12 Hanford West, 8-1. Next up is a road test at No. 4 Dinuba on Thursday. The latter reached the second round by blanking No. 13 Delano, 9-0. In a battle of two area teams, No. 3 Foothill also got a 9-0 decision over No. 14 Tehachapi. No. 6 Ridgeview topped No. 11 Exeter, 6-3, and that sets up another all-local playoff match with Foothill hosting Ridgeview on Thursday.
The Division 5 playoff action on Tuesday included four locals seeking to reach the next round. No. 5 R.F. Kennedy, last year's D-5 team title runner-up, hosted No. 9 Golden West. In other action, Cesar Chavez advanced with a 6-3 win over No. 11 Santa Maria and will now travel to play No. 3 Riverdale. Seventh-seeded Highland defeated No. 10 Hanford, 6-3. No. 15 Arvin was eliminated by No. 2 Granite Hills, 8-1. Highland plays at Granite Hills on Thursday.
All matches are at 4 p.m. unless both teams agree to adjust the start time. They also need to report it to the CIF Central Section office.
