Flyers eliminate Penguins with Game 6 overtime win

PHILADELPHIA - The Penguins marched in range of history, forcing overtime in Game 6 against the Philadelphia Flyers after dropping the first three games of the first-round series.

But the comeback attempt ended in crushing fashion, as Cam York won the series in overtime for Philadelphia on a shot from the point.

The Flyers' 1-0 win in Wednesday's Game 6 at Xfinity Mobile Arena sent them to the second round. Pittsburgh's season is over.

Arturs Silovs made 31 saves for the Penguins, who were unable to break through despite generating a litany of chances throughout the game, especially in overtime.

Dan Vladar delivered a 42-save shutout for the Flyers.

The teams traded chances in an energetic first period. The Flyers registered seven shots from the slot, including a breakaway for Owen Tippett that Silovs stretched out and denied with his pad.

Vladar made 12 saves in the Flyers' net, including stopping back-to-back rush chances for Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby.

The Penguins' turnover troubles from earlier in the series returned but did not burn them in a scoreless opening frame.

Pittsburgh had a paltry first-period power play then made up for it with an excellent penalty kill.

The second period was a bit more subdued but still featured good looks for both squads. The Penguins had another uninspiring power play. Silovs made 10 more saves and did a better job of preventing rebounds than he had in the first.

The Flyers employed some line-change shenanigans after they iced the puck early in the period. Trevor Zegras went down the tunnel when he was supposed to be on the ice, helping his tired teammates recover.

The intrastate rivals entered the second intermission scoreless. The horn at the end of the period bailed the Penguins out of an extended shift in the offensive zone for the Flyers - then Kris Letang made a serious mental mistake, roughing Travis Konecny after the buzzer to give Philadelphia a power play to begin the third.

The Penguins' penalty killers again shut down the Flyers and prevented Letang from paying for his error.

Tommy Novak got a golden chance in front of the net shortly after but passed out of it.

The goalies traded highlight saves to keep the score knotted at 0.

Silovs made his second fantastic stop of the night on Matvei Michkov when the Flyers' forward skated into an open look with about 10 minutes to play.

Vladar denied Bryan Rust from in tight with under four minutes to play. The Penguins took 13 shots in the third period. The Flyers had just five.

But the dueling netminder performances sent the teams to the first overtime of the series.

And they continued after regulation. Silovs saved a Konecny opportunity from just in front of the net less than 90 seconds in.

Vladar countered with clutch stops on Elmer Soderblom, Connor Dewar and Malkin. Just past the midpoint of overtime, Mantha skated in with a backhand that Vladar turned away with his pad and then controlled as several Penguins tried to hammer away at the puck.

Pittsburgh dominated much of overtime. Then Porter Martone skated free with about three minutes remaining. Silovs made the stop, but after the Penguins iced the puck, the Flyers ended it on the ensuing shift.

It was over when …

York fired in a shot from long range that beat Silovs with traffic in front at the 17:32 mark of overtime.
