$4,250 California Ski Pass Has One Feature You Won't Find on Epic or Ikon

When asked, most skiers think of one of three pass options: the Indy Pass, the Ikon Pass, and the Epic Pass (or, maybe, the Power Pass, if they live in the Southwest).

That makes sense. These passes are big and offer broad access to countless resorts. They're also relatively affordable, at least compared to what you'd pay for a lift ticket.

But they aren't the only option. A collection of lesser-known passes is on the market, too, including the California Gold Pass, which goes on sale this Friday. Keep reading about what the California Gold Pass offers that Ikon, Epic, and Indy don't.

Before we go any further, a caveat: this is a niche product and only a limited number are available. The pass lives well outside the price range of the average skier, costing $4,250, but it comes with unique perks.

For one, the California Gold Pass works at 36 of the state's alpine and cross-country resorts without blackout dates, including Palisades Tahoe, Kirkwood, Sugar Bowl, and Mammoth Mountain. It's sold by Ski California, a trade association for Californian ski areas.

Perhaps more importantly, though, the pass is transferable, so skiers can hand it off to whoever they want. Usually, passes are locked to one person. Violating that term can result in penalties or outright bans. This isn't the case with the California Gold Pass.

In a press release, Ski California president John Rice called it the "ultimate ski pass."

Who, though, is it really for? The press release provided some hints, noting that this is "one of the most coveted passes for skiers, snowboarders, and organizations who purchase them for use as an employee or client perk."

Businesses, then, seem to be one of the target audiences. A law firm, for example, could pick one up and offer it to clients or lawyers who have a big win. Some ski shops do something similar, often having a "shop pass" at a local resort that gets passed around amongst the crew.

A lone skier with deep pockets could, of course, pick up the California Gold Pass, too.

Overall, it's an interesting look inside the realm of specialty passes.

The Boyne Passport, which costs $2,800 at the time of writing, is another example. The pass just covers mountains owned by Boyne Resorts, like Big Sky and Brighton. At one point on the ritziest end of the spectrum, there's the Palisades Tahoe Apex Club, which offered priority lift lines and member lounges for $12,000 at the start of this season.

In contrast, the Ikon Pass and Epic Pass now cost $1,449 and $1,089, respectively.
