Divers take center stage ahead of next week's CIF-SS swim finals
The CIF Southern Section swimming championships for Division's 1-4 take place next week at Mt. San Antonio College.
Rowland's Kyle Tsuei, who earned San Gabriel Valley boys swimmer of the year as a sophomore last season after taking home two first-place medals in the Division 2 finals, along with two second-place medals in relays, is certainly one to keep tabs on.
Tsuei dominated in his best event, the 50 freestle, easily winning in 20.47. Tsuei wasn't the favorite in the 100 backstroke following the prelims, but he showed his grit in the finals. Tsuei took over the final 25 yards to take the lead and held on for the victory in a winning time of 48.66.
You can expect Muir's Rosio Valencia to be among the girls top competitors. As a freshman last season Rosario won the girls 200 medley title in Division 4 in a time of 2:11.73. She also finished third in the 200 breastroke in 1:07.88. She will be looking for two titles this season.
Swimmers hoping to advance to next week's championships qualify through league finals, which take place this week. But also part of the swimming finals is the boys and girls 1-meter diving championships that will conclude at the Marguerite Aquatic Complex in Mission Viejo on Thursday.
Temple City sophomore Jiaqi Liu is favored again to win the Division 2 championships. As a freshman, Liu took home the Division 2 title with a finals score of 519.20.
Liu is an even bigger favorite after setting the tone with the top qualifying mark of 555.10, which towers over the field. Mayfield senior Anna Tanaka qualified fourth and is hoping to reach the medal stand.
San Dimas freshman Barbara Chen has a chance to medal in Division 3 after qualifying with a fourth-best score of 4:56.80
Diamond Bar sophomore Marc Huang could earn a medal in the Division 1 finals after qualifying third with a score of 4:64.40.
In the Division 4 boys finals, only two swimmers advanced and they will compete for the title. Both are local swimmers. Wilson's Jeffrey Guo is the favorite and will go head-to-head with La Habra's Eric Lopez.
