Baseball roundup: Newport Harbor beats Huntington Beach to keep Sunset title hopes alive
Newport Harbor kept its Sunset League championship hopes alive by beating Huntington Beach 1-0 on Tuesday at Newport Harbor High.
Gavin Guy pitched a five-hit shutout for Newport Harbor (19-7, 13-3) with eight strikeouts. Keoni Wun had two hits including a RBI single to drive in Cameron Hatfield in the third inning. Noah Whittaker also had a hit for the Sailors.
Cayden Hammond allowed one run in six innings for Huntington Beach (18-6-1, 14-2) with three hits allowed and five strikeouts. Owen Bone went 2 for 3 with a double and Jared Grindlinger went 2 for 2.
Newport Harbor is one game behind Huntington Beach at the top of the league standings and the two teams play two more times this week. Huntington Beach has won eight consecutive league championships dating back to 2017.
Newport Harbor is seeking its first league championship since 1947.

In the Sunset League:
Edison 16, Corona del Mar 3: Cody Kruis hit three doubles and drove in five runs for Edison in a blowout win.
Andy Van Den Eynden had a double with two RBIs for Edison (11-15, 7-9) and Noah Hunter went 2 for 3 with a double and a RBI. Roman Goliuboff and Ben Wilson each drove in two runs. Will Stanley allowed one earned run in six innings with six strikeouts for the Chargers.
Stevie Jones had a home run with two RBIs for Corona del Mar (13-12, 6-10).
Four teams entered Tuesday tied for third place in the league standings. Edison and Marina are now tied for third.
Marina 5, Fountain Valley 1: Jaxon Vilardi pitched a complete game and allowed just one run for Marina.
Will Baker and Max Conde each had a hit with a RBI for Marina (12-14, 7-9). Aiden Hesse had two hits for the Vikings and Vilardi drove in a run.
Blake Wilson allowed no earned runs in 5⅔ innings for Fountain Valley (12-13, 6-10). Noah McGee went 1 for 3 with a RBI and Nixon Hunt went 2 for 2.
In the Trinity League:
Orange Lutheran 3, Servite 0: LSU signee Cooper Sides pitched six shutout innings with three hits allowed and four strikeouts for Orange Lutheran.
Brady Murrieta had a double with a RBI for Orange Lutheran (19-4, 7-3). Jordan Kurz had a single, a RBI and a stolen base. Ricardo Hurtado went 2 for 3 with a run scored and CJ Weinstein stole a base.
JSerra 8, Santa Margarita 7 (8 innings): Oregon State signee Blake Bowen hit a walk-off home run in the eighth inning for JSerra.
Logan Osmundson also hit a home run for JSerra (9-17, 3-10). with three RBIs and a stolen base. Joey Koenig went 4 for 4 with a RBI and Zac Veronda stole a base. Bowen also doubled and Aiden Rae pitched 1⅓ scoreless innings of relief to get the win.
Cooper Holland went 2 for 5 with a triple and two RBIs for Santa Margarita (14-11, 4-9) and Warren Wulfemeyer went 3 for 3 with two RBIs. Tyler George and Robby Mayer IV each went 1 for 3 with a RBI and Warren Gravely IV added a double.
In the South Coast League:
Trabuco Hills 2, Tesoro 1: Trabuco Hills clinched at least a share of the South Coast League championship by narrowly beating Tesoro.
Josh Fitch allowed one run in 5⅔ innings with four hits allowed and one strikeout for Trabuco Hills (14-9, 7-3). Ryan Dmytrowicz had a single with a RBI and Ethan Miller went 2 for 3 with a stolen base.
Jordan Harlan allowed one earned run in six innings with seven strikeouts for Tesoro (8-13-1, 2-7-1). Eli Martin added two hits with a double.
Trabuco Hills can clinch an outright league championship with one more win in the remaining two games against Tesoro. The Mustangs won the league championship last season.
Aliso Niguel 12, Dana Hills 2: Aliso Niguel had two home runs and six extra base hits in a rout of Dana Hills.
Chad Alderman and Will Jenican each hit home runs for Aliso Niguel (16-7-2, 4-5-1). Alderman went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. Trevor Alderman had a double with two RBIs and Jenican added three RBIs.
Andrew Watson pitched five shutout innings for the Wolverines with two strikeouts and went 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Ryan Maguire had a double with a RBI and Carson Etnire stole two bases.
Tyler Van Duyne had two hits for Dana Hills (16-9, 5-5) and Erik Turpin drove in a run.
In the Sea View League:
Mission Viejo 5, Capistrano Valley 2: Mission Viejo had just two hits and committed five errors on defense, but held on to first place with a win over Capistrano Valley.
Wyatt Dunlap pitched 4⅔ innings with one hit allowed and five strikeouts for Mission Viejo (16-8, 7-3). Robert Nestor and Carson Browning had hits for the Diablos and Aiden Chapuis drove in a run. The Diablos have won six consecutive games.
Brayden Ivory allowed two earned runs in five innings for Capo Valley (7-18, 4-6). Reed Hitzler went 2 for 3 with a double and a RBI and Brock Rainis went 2 for 3 with a double.
In the Empire League:
Fullerton 12, Laguna Hills 1: Fullerton scored 10 runs in the first three innings in a dominant win over Laguna Hills to keep its league championship hopes alive.
Ronnie Martinez went 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs for Fullerton (15-8, 7-3). Mason Park went 2 for 2 with a double and three RBIs and Luke Gonzalez added two hits. Calin Williams went 2 for 3 with a RBI and Caleb Brown went 1 for 3 with a RBI and a stolen base.
Jaiden Magana had two hits for Laguna Hills (12-12, 4-6).
Costa Mesa 10, Katella 3: Felix Tiquia had a home run with two RBIs for Costa Mesa, which held on to its first-place spot in the league standings.
Wylan Rottschafer pitched three no-hit innings to get the save for Costa Mesa (19-6, 8-3) and went 3 for 4 with a double and a RBI. Kash Foti and Noah Uribe each had a double with two RBIs and Will Morales went 3 for 3 with a double and a RBI.
In the Coast League:
Savanna 4, Century 1: Josh Eich allowed no earned runs as he pitched a complete game and had four strikeouts for Savanna.
Eich also had a double with two RBIs and his brother Nate added a double. Arturo Santillan had a triple for Savanna (15-9, 8-3), which is in first place in the league standings.
