Beau Leroux leads Quakes to US Open Cup semifinal; Timo Werner injured

SAN JOSE - The Earthquakes beat Minnesota United 4-2 in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 on Tuesday night at PayPal Park, but they may have lost even more in the injury department.

In the 31st minute of the match, star striker Timo Werner, whose offseason acquisition has keyed the best starting run in MLS history, went down with what appeared to be a lower left leg injury while chasing down a long ball along the far touch line.

Werner remained on the pitch for about three minutes and received treatment from the Quakes’ medical staff before substituting out in the 34th minute.

Quakes coach Bruce Arena said the team will not know Werner’s status until Wednesday, when he is examined by San Jose’s team doctors.

Midfielder Beau Leroux, who scored two goals in San Jose’s win, was on the pitch for the Quakes when Werner went down. He said Werner was grasping his hamstring while down on the field but was in good spirits after the game despite the injury.

“We saw him just hold his hamstring and kind of hop around,” Leroux said. “And it was pretty unfortunate to see that. As a player, you kind of know what that is. Hopefully, he rests and recovers soon.”

In rosier news for San Jose, Leroux gave the Quakes their first goal in the 15th minute. He took advantage of a Minnesota turnover in the box and evaded his defender with a smooth inside-out move before depositing a left-footed shot into the top right corner of the net past Minnesota goalkeeper Drake Callender.

But Minnesota countered in the 59th minute with a goal by Anthony Markanich, who finished a loose ball in the box after Nectarios Triantis served it in from the wing. The goal was attributed as an Earthquakes own goal after deflecting off defender Ronaldo Vieira.

Minnesota took the lead in the 63rd minute when Tomas Chancalay curled in a far-post shot past the outstretched arms of Quakes keeper Daniel.

San Jose equalized in the 68th minute when Jack Skahan deflected a shot in off a Minnesota defender. The Quakes retook the lead when Leroux one-timed in a pass from Skahan near the edge of the box in the 73rd minute.

They added on moments later when Niko Tsakiris finished off a two-on-none after Ousseni Bouda’s defender fell down. Bouda kept going into the box and found Tsakiris for the easy tap-in in the 76th minute.
