Former U.S. Olympic Gold Medalist Jordyn Wieber Steps Down After Historic Run
In 2012, Jordyn Wieber was part of the U.S. contingent that took home the gymnastics team gold medal at the Olympics in London. In the years since calling it a career, she's enjoyed a successful career in coaching. But after seven years at the University of Arkansas, she's stepping down.
On Tuesday, the Arkansas gymnastics team announced that Wieber would be stepping down. Assistant coach Chris Brooks would be promoted to head coach effective immediately.
In a statement, Wieber announced that she would be stepping away from athletics entirely to focus on "family and other passions." She pledged to always root for the Razorbacks.
"Serving as Head Coach of Arkansas Gymnastics has been an honor. I'm deeply grateful to our student-athletes, staff, and Razorback fans for an unforgettable journey," Wieber said. "With a heavy, but full heart and immense pride in what we have accomplished, I'm stepping away from athletics to focus on my family and other passions. I'm excited for what's ahead and will forever be cheering on the Razorbacks!"
Under Wieber's leadership, Arkansas made the NCAA Tournament twice. The team enjoyed 30 All-America honors and 40 total All-SEC selections.
Praise for Wieber
Arkansas Vice Chancellor and athletic director Hunter Yurachek offered his gratitude to Wieber for her contributions to the program. He further offered his praise to Brooks as he begins his tenure with the team.
"I am so grateful for Coach Wieber and everything she has done for our gymnastics program," Yurachek said. "What she and her staff have accomplished over the last seven years has simply been phenomenal. She has built our program into one of the elite programs in the nation while connecting with our fanbase in a new, energetic way to make our home meets inside Bud Walton Arena must-see events.
"After learning of Coach Wieber's desire to step away from athletics, my mind immediately focused on how to keep the program's momentum moving forward. Coach Brooks' passion, energy and coaching knowledge made him an easy choice. His work alongside Coach Wieber has helped turn the Gymbacks into what they are today. I believe Coach Brooks will continue to grow our program moving forward."
"I would like to thank Hunter Yurachek and the University of Arkansas Athletics Department for the incredible opportunity to lead this program," Brooks said." I am grateful for the foundation that Jordyn has helped build through the last seven seasons. We will continue with the same heart, soul, and vision for the program. The next chapter is an exciting one for my family and for the Gymbacks, and I'm excited to get going. Wooo Pig!"
In the early 2010s Wieber was one of the most decorated gymnasts in the world. She won gold in the all-around and bronze on the balance beam at the 2011 World Championships in Tokyo, followed by three golds at the Pacific Rim Championships in Seattle the following year.
Though she could not claim solo medal glory in London, she contributed to the team final on the vault, uneven bars and floor exercise to secure the gold.
