Nowadays, in the world of sports, more and more active professional athletes are becoming owners, co-owners, or investors in soccer clubs or teams from other sports.
This is the case of Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany Mahomes. In 2023, both became co-owners of Kansas City Current, a women's soccer team that competes in the National Women's Soccer League.
The quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs became the first active NFL player to hold an ownership stake in a team from the National Women's Soccer League.

The Mahomes' decision to invest in the club stems from Brittany's past. She played professionally in Iceland, and after marrying Patrick Mahomes, she chose to join Angie Long and Chris Long in investing in the Kansas City Current project.
This investment is already paying off financially, as in 2025, the club was valued at $275 million. However, in 2026, Forbes reported that the figure had risen significantly, making the Kansas City Current the second most valuable team in the entire league.
According to the aforementioned report, the team, currently sitting 14th in the National Women's Soccer League standings, ranks behind Angel City FC, which is valued at $340 million.
But how much is the Kansas City Current valued at? The club, which is co-owned by Patrick Mahomes, is valued at $325 million, an increase of $40 million compared to last year.
According to the team's message, the long-term project is ambitious for this club:
"When Angie Long, Chris Long, and Brittany Mahomes brought this NWSL franchise to Kansas City, they were clear in their commitment to do it right, for the players and for the city."
On their website, the club also states that the organization's goal is to "become the best women's football club in the world."
