Cowboys' DeMarvion Overshown Makes Intriguing Move
Last week, Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones offered up that the team will not sign wide receiver George Pickens to a long-term contract this offseason.
Dallas placed the nonexclusive franchise tag, worth $27.3 million, on Pickens in late February, and the Cowboys expect Pickens to play the 2026 NFL season on that tag. Beyond that? Who knows.
It’s a surprisingly anticlimactic resolution, though Pickens could still refuse to play on the tag. Should more develop between the Cowboys and Pickens this summer, it would be the second straight year that fireworks erupt between Cowboys brass and prominent NFL agent David Mulugheta of Athletes First.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and Mulugheta fired public shots back and forth last year in regard to contentious long-term contract negotiations with All-Pro pass rusher Micah Parsons. Ultimately, Dallas traded Parsons to the Green Bay Packers on Aug. 28, 2025.
Regardless of Pickens’ situation, the Jones family isn’t done dealing with Mulugheta.
“Cowboys LB DeMarvion Overshown, whose rookie contract expires after this season, now has hired agent David Mulugheta to represent him,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday afternoon.
The Cowboys drafted Overshown in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft. The former Texas Longhorn tore his ACL in the preseason and missed his entire rookie season. Overshown emerged as a burgeoning star in 2024 - posting five sacks, five QB hits, eight tackles for loss, and 90 total tackles (56 solo). However, he suffered another devastating knee injury on Dec. 9, 2024, against the Cincinnati Bengals.
It took Overshown until last November to return from his torn ACL, MCL, and PCL, and he played a total of six games in 2025.
Stephen Jones spoke about Overshown’s forthcoming contract year at the 2026 NFL Combine in late February, saying, “Obviously, he needs to put together a full season, and if he does, I think it’s going to be a great season.”
Contract implications aside, there will be less pressure squarely on Overshown’s shoulders to resuscitate the Cowboys’ defense in a post-Parsons world.
Dallas traded up one spot to draft Caleb Downs, an extremely highly touted Ohio State safety, at No. 11 overall before selecting UCF edge rusher Malachi Lawrence at No. 23 overall in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft on Thursday night. See the full 2026 Cowboys draft class here.
