Own-goal lifts first-place Wave past Summit in Denver

The San Diego Wave won Saturday to remain in first place in the National Women's Soccer League standings.

This time, they were both lucky and good.

Carson Pickett's own-goal in the 65th minute gave the visiting Wave a come-from-behind, 3-2 victory over the expansion Denver Summit on Saturday night in Colorado. At 5-1-0, the Wave maintain their league lead. Denver falls to 1-2-3.

San Diego trailed 2-0 before Lia Godfrey got the Wave on the board with a goal in the 49th minute. Eight minutes later, Kennedy Wesley - fresh off her goal-scoring stint with the United States Women's National Team - pulled her club even.

Then, fortune intervened. San Diego's Dudinha dribbled down the left sideline before taking a hard right just before the goalmouth. She fired a low-angle shot that hit Pickett, a Summit defender, as she scrambled toward the net.

The Wave have little time to recover from their mile-high win. The club travels to Portland on Wednesday night for a match against the second-place Thorns, the team that eliminated San Diego from last year’s playoffs. The showdown starts at 7 p.m. and will air on CBS Sports Network.

The team returns home next Sunday to take on Bay FC at Snapdragon Stadium.
