Prep roundup: Shaun Presley, Jacob Casiano lead California past Dublin
California has risen to the occasion through its first three East Bay Athletic League Valley Division baseball games.
The Grizzlies stayed undefeated in league play on Thursday as Jacob Casiano and Shaun Presley provided the pop on offense and Thomas Casserly and Matthew Carano got it done on the mound in a 5-3 victory.
Presley hit a two-run homer in the fifth to break a 3-3 tie and Casiano had two hits, drove in three runs and scored once for California, which improved to 10-5-2, 3-0.
Dublin — ranked 12th in the latest Bay Area News Group top 20 — scored the first two runs and added a run in the visitor’s half of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead.
Christian Acuna, Brandt Nunemacher and Jacob Salvador each knocked in a run for the Gaels, who slipped to 14-4, 2-1.
The teams meet again Friday at Dublin.
No. 7 College Park 8, Campolindo 0: Chase Tarter, Aidan Wescott and Nathan Glieden combined on a two-hit shutout and Nicholas Motta had two hits and an RBI to lead the host Falcons to a win in Diablo Athletic League Foothill Division play.
College Park took command with five in the second and added a run in the fifth and two in the sixth, improving to 13-4, 2-2.
Logan Childers and Nico Martinez had Campolindo’s only hits as the Cougars dropped to 11-5, 2-2.
No. 13 Granada 3, Amador Valley 1: Braden Makley struck out 12 with no walks and allowed just one run and two hits over six innings to lead host Granada to a win over Amador Valley in EBAL Mountain Division play.
Joseph Holt had two hits and an RBI and Jack Badger doubled and scored a run to help Granada improve to 12-5, 3-0.
Max Fried had a double and an RBI for Amador Valley 8-9, 1-2.
No. 16 Willow Glen 18, Branham 3 (6 innings): Willow Glen, playing on the road, erupted for 11 runs in the sixth inning to turn this Blossom Valley Athletic League Mt. Hamilton Division game into a rout.
Tyler Veroneau, Christopher Amann and Jack Rudd knocked in three runs apiece and Ben Mudgett, Zack Koontz and Joshua Kaminski had three RBIs each to lead the Rams, who improved to 16-2-1, 8-0.
Branham is 6-12, 3-5.
Sacred Heart Prep 5, Aragon 2 (8 innings): Sacred Heart Prep kept pace with San Mateo atop the Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division standings, scoring three in the eighth to break a 2-2 tie and beat host Aragon.
Drew Parker had four hits and scored a run and Blake Affrunti and Nico Pollioni each had two hits and an RBI as SHP ran its record to 15-4, 7-1.
Xavier Ruiz had two hits and drove in a run for Aragon (12-7, 4-4).
Heritage 9, Pittsburg 5: Heritage took a six-run lead into the seventh inning and held off host Pittsburg to complete a two-game sweep in Bay Valley Athletic League play.
Aidan Rangel had three hits, including a double, and Trevor Thomas had a double among his two hits for the Pirates. Both knocked in three runs.
Heritage also got two hits apiece from Aiden Lingley, Tyler Williams and JZ McArthur as it improved to 10-6-1, 3-2.
Jaydon Baluyut had two hits and JJ Robinson had two RBIs for Pittsburg (12-7, 0-4).
SOFTBALL
No. 1 Livermore 7, No. 13 California 1: Livermore stretched its winning streak to 16 as Gianna Willes had three hits and two RBIs and Isabella Kelton drove in three runs to lead the Cowboys in EBAL play.
Kaci Norton allowed one run and struck out six over six innings to help Livermore improve to 19-1, 9-0.
Kaylee Gallegos knocked in California’s only run as the Grizzlies dropped to 10-8, 5-3.
No. 2 St. Francis 8, Sacred Heart Cathedral 0: St. Francis scored two in the second and two in the third, then put the West Catholic Athletic League game away with four in the seventh.
Maya Meltz led the Lancers with a home run and two RBIs. Peyton Tsao also knocked in two runs and Hailey Nguyen and Bianka Fisher combined on the shutout with 14 strikeouts as the visitors ran their record to 19-2, 4-0.
SHC is 7-6, 0-4.
No. 14 Granada 6, No. 12 Carondelet 5: In a back-and-forth EBAL game, host Granada got the last punch as the Matadors scored a run in the fourth to tie and one in the sixth to take the lead for good.
Madison Trindade had two doubles, scored twice and knocked in a run, Madeline Bittman added three hits and Alicia Mitre had two hits and an RBI to lead Granada (10-9, 6-2).
Angela Gates contributed a hit and two RBIs for Carondelet, which slipped to 12-7, 5-4.
San Ramon Valley 7, Foothill 6: San Ramon Valley built a 6-1 lead through four innings, then hung on in the final frame to beat host Foothill in an EBAL game.
Gia Ryan led the way for the Wolves. The sophomore hit a home run and two doubles, scored twice and drove in two runs. Charlie Callison and Maddie Neighbor each had two hits and Natalie Sun knocked in two runs for SRV, which improved to 13-6, 6-2.
Madden Dinsley-Klinefelter had a hit and two RBIs for Foothill, which dropped to 9-8, 3-5.
Foothill rallied for three runs in the home half of the seventh before SRV closed out the win.
