SF Giants' Jung Hoo Lee ‘banged up' quad in win over Dodgers
SAN FRANCISCO – The Giants' high-risk decision to send outfielder Jung Hoo Lee home from first after an Heliot Ramos single might have cost the team more than just a run in the sixth inning during their 3-1 victory over the Dodgers on Tuesday.
Dodgers second baseman Alex Freeland made an accurate throw to catcher Dalton Rushing for an easy play at the plate. Lee was out by several feet, and then took a few moments to get up and hobble to the dugout after being called out. He finished the night 2 for 3 with an RBI.
"I banged up my quad in Washington, and just banged it up again today," Lee said through an interpreter in the clubhouse after the game.
Lee added that he has “no worries” about it. Giants manager Tony Vitello said he expects Lee to play Wednesday against the Dodgers. He characterized the decision to remove Lee and insert Jerar Encarnacion into right field as precautionary.
"Couple tough slides recently, just playing hard," Vitello said. "He, I guarantee, wants to play no matter how he feels. But it probably just kind of aggravated that patch of rough skin from sliding in the way that he has at those two plays at the plate."
Vitello also defended third base coach Hector Borg's aggressive baserunning decision during an inning where rain briefly poured over the park.
"You got a two-out hit against one of the best pitchers on the planet, how many of those are you going to get?" Vitello said. "The relay throw in is lobbed, and there’s kind of extra air under that. And so you could see it being kind of a play where the defense, who’s rarely sloppy, comes off looking sloppy if it worked out in our favor."
The Giants (10-13) play the Dodgers (16-7) again on Wednesday, with first pitch at 6:45 p.m. Tyler Mahle (0-3, 7.23) is expected to start for San Francisco against Shohei Ohtani (2-0, 0.50).
