Santa Cruz's Tobin Ortenblad takes fourth in Fuego XL at 2026 Sea Otter Classic | Local Roundup
Santa Cruz's Tobin Ortenblad, 31, took fourth place out of 535 riders in the prestigious Fuego XL at the 2026 Sea Otter Classic in Salinas on Sunday.
He completed the 66-mile course, which featured 7,800 feet of climbing, in 4 hours, 6 minutes, and 42 seconds.
Only 433 riders finished the race.
Andrew L'Esperance, of Waterloo, Québec, Canada, won the men's title in 3:55:56. Cameron Jones, of Blacksburg, Virginia, took second in 3:56:06, and Toby Hassett, of Golden, Colorado, took third in 4:02:37.
Kate Courtney of Portola Valley won the women's title in 4:38:33. Emma Langley (4:57:01) of Richmond, Virginia, took second, and Leah Van Der Linden (5:02:09) of Boulder, Colorado, was third.
Santa Cruz's Diana Drew, 31, took 15th in 5:41:58, and Aptos' Courtney Dimpel, 43, took 43rd in 6:53:54.
Santa Cruz's Sam Toohey took 19th in the elite men's downhill.
Women's golf
Deb Jackson Invitational: UC Santa Cruz golfer Olivia Lew tied for second place at the 10-team Deb Jackson Invitational, hosted by No. 1 ranked Emory University, in Douglasville, Georgia, on Sunday.
Lew, a sophomore out of Clovis West in Fresno, closed with a 1-over-par 72 at West Pines Golf Club in the 36-hole event. She finished with a 3-over-par 145 total, which was matched by Emory's Esther Jung.
Emory's Amanda Zheng, ranked No. 2 in the nation individually, earned medalist honors with a 1-under 141 total.
Emory won the team title with a 9-over total. No. 3 Carnegie Mellon took second at 21 over. And No. 7 Washington-St. Louis took third at 38 over. No. 26 UCSC tok fourth at 54 over,
Emory and Washington-St. Louis fielded ‘A' and ‘B' squads.
Sophomore Samantha Shaw (155; T21st), freshman Maya London (162; T34th), sophomore Adeline Truong (166; 42nd), and sophomore Alyssa Castellanos (167; T43rd) also scored for the Banana Slugs.
London carded an eagle on the par-5 13th hole, which measured 497 yards.
UCSC competes in the American Southwest Conference Championships in Whitney, Texas, on May 1-3.
Running
Santa Cruz Westside Half Marathon: Valencia's Nicholas Sciole (1:15:12) and La Honda's Madeleine Boyle (1:29:33) won titles at the Santa Cruz Westside Half Marathon on Sunday.
Aptos' Allen Bjur (1:18:16) took second and Atwater's Nathan Knight (1:19:14) took third.
San Francisco's Ewa Ulatowska (1:35:33) took second among the women, and Fremont's Oyungerel Bernstein (1:35:57) was third.
Santa Cruz Westside 10K: Pacific Grove's Tayler Aarness (34:23) and Oakland's Grace Gonzales (39:10) earned wins at the Santa Cruz Westside 10K on Sunday.
Newark's Peter Hicks (36:36) took second and Royal Oaks' Oscar Padilla (38:49) took third.
Stanford's Tasheena Thompson (42:49) took second among the women, and Capitola's Angela Roland (45:27) was third.
Santa Cruz Westside 5K: San Jose's Derek Tao (18:27) and Cristina Hasson (21:25) posted first-place finishes at the Santa Cruz Westside 5K on Sunday.
Shafter's Matthew Martinez (19:20) took second and Joshua Martinez (20:10), also of Shafter, took third.
Santa Cruz's Taylor Abbott (23:14) took second among the women, and San Jose's Madison Sayler-Tait (23:35) took third.
Boston 5K: San Francisco's Vanessa Fraser, a former Scotts Valley High and Stanford University track talent, took 11th place in the Boston 5K Invitational race in 16:08 on Saturday.
Ethiopia's Gela Hambese won in 15:28.
Boys volleyball
Peninsula Classic: Harbor beat Harker of San Jose 25-19, 20-25, 15-7 for third place at the 16-team Peninsula Classic in Monterey on Saturday.
The Pirates (26-5 overall, 9-0 SCCAL), ranked No. 35 in the state and No. 6 in the Central Coast Section, also earned wins over Palma, 25-15, 25-18, and Ripon Christian 27-25, 25-23, and lost to Justin Garza of Fresno, 20-25, 25-22, 15-11.
"Tournaments are a great opportunity for us to test the mettle and agility of our system against teams outside the SCCAL," Pirates coach Kendall Ronzao said. "We learn something new each time we play in one and the Monterey tourney was no different."
On the day, senior Cooper Lastition finished with 38 kills and 23 digs, and junior setter Rocklin Paco made 84 assists and 13 digs.
Junior JJ Laughlin totaled 22 kills, eight aces, 11 assists, and 14 digs for the Pirates. Senior Grady McKee totaled 14 kills with a .462 hitting efficiency and made 10 digs. Senior Josh Rejfir made 19 kills and five blocks.
Junior Eddie Weaver shined with 18 digs and classmate Ryan Wait had 14 digs.
Harbor plays at San Lorenzo Valley (8-13, 3-6) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
