Warriors' Steve Kerr Drops Cryptic Hint About NBA Coaching Future
For the past 12 years, Steve Kerr turned the Golden State Warriors into an NBA powerhouse.
He won an NBA championship in his first season with the team, he led the Warriors to an NBA record 73 regular-season wins and .890 win percentage in his second, and he captured three more titles by 2022 to cement a legacy that won't be forgotten.
But after Friday's 111-96 loss to the Phoenix Suns, Kerr hinted that his time with the Warriors may be coming to an end. If it does, he made it clear he doesn't want to coach anywhere else, stating he could never leave Steph Curry.
"My plan is to take a little time and, I don't know, take a week or two and eventually sit down and talk with Joe and Mike," Kerr told reporters. "Just see where they are, and I'll tell them where I am, and we'll talk about what's next for the Warriors, what the plan is for the offseason, and we will come to a collaborative decision on what's next.
"I don't know what's going to happen. I still love coaching, but I get it - these jobs all have an expiration date. There is a run that happens, and when the run ends sometimes it's time for new blood and new ideas and all that. If that's the case, I will be nothing but grateful for the most amazing opportunity any person could have to coach this franchise in front of our fans, to coach Steph Curry, to coach [Draymond Green], this whole group. It may still go on, it may not - I don't know, at this point. We all need to step away a little bit and reconvene."
Cameras caught Kerr after the game telling Curry and Green he didn't know what would happen next but that he appreciated and loved them both.
If Kerr and the Warriors part ways, he will leave behind one of the winningest legacies in NBA history. Kerr's 604 career wins rank 28th all-time and fourth among active head coaches. His .631 win percentage also ranks second among active coaches and eighth all-time among coaches with three or more seasons.
Kerr's 104 playoff wins also rank sixth all-time, and the only head coach with a better in percentage (.684) in the playoffs is the legendary Phil Jackson (.688).
