High school sports roundup: St. Francis splits with St. Ignatius as Lancers shut down Wildcats' bats

St. Francis wasn't going to let St. Ignatius get all the baseball shine this week.

Three days after falling to the Wildcats 10-6 in Mountain View, the Lancers went on the road to Daly City and took home a 3-0 victory, shutting down SI's bats while scoring a run in the first, another in the fourth and one more in the sixth.

Aaron Bonini, Siale Tulua and Jack Leeper hit RBI singles for the Lancers (16-3, 5-1 WCAL), and Kyle McMillan pitched a near-complete game (6 ⅔ IP) with five hits allowed, three walks and three strikeouts.

Landon King, Bonini and Tulua each had a pair of hits for the Lancers, the No. 2 team in the Bay Area News Group rankings. Chase Gordon and R.J. Church also had two hits each for No. 7 SI (12-5, 4-2).

No. 8 Serra 9, No. 10 Bellarmine 2

Another big West Catholic Athletic League series ended in a split as the Padres bounced back from a close 2-1 loss on Tuesday in San Jose.

Serra (12-6, 2-4) got the bats going early as Jack Wessell hit a two-run homer and Jayce Peavey an RBI double in the bottom of the second. Then the Padres really opened things up in the fourth, when Aaron Minton hit a game-breaking grand slam that scored PJ Bordin, William Walbridge and Peavy to give Serra a 7-2 lead.

Donovan Friedland drove in Ayden Beal and Brody Crudelli with a single in the fifth.

Emmet Arnott's solo homer and Isaiah Beyah's fielder's choice provided the scoring for Bellarmine (14-3, 4-2).

Castro Valley 8, No. 6 Berkeley 5

On Wednesday, Castro Valley lost 10-0 to Berkeley.

The Trojans (8-9, 1-3 WACC Foothill) made that lopsided defeat history on Friday, earning a split thanks to five runs in the second innings and two more insurance scores in the fourth in response to a four-run rally by Berkeley (15-2-1, 3-1) in the third.

Aidan Hackbarth and Sam Galli each drove in two runs for Castro Valley. Galli had a two-run homer in the fourth and Hackbarth plated a pair with a second-inning single.

Akanni Owodunni had three RBIs for Berkeley.

No. 15 Granada 8, No. 12 Foothill 2

Granada (11-5, 2-0 EBAL Mountain) finished off a series sweep of Foothill (9-6, 0-2) and may be getting its sea legs back after an uneven start to the season.

After starting 5-5, the Matadors have now won six games in a row, many of them by decisive margins. Friday was another drop in that bucket as a seven-run fifth inning turned a 2-1 deficit into a lights-out lead.

Joseph Holt drove in three runs for the Mats, Austin Sheldon batted in two, and Tyler Palma, Luke Creeden and Max Rocheleau each had one RBI.

Grant Hoenninger plated both runs for Foothill.

Amador Valley 5, No. 13 San Ramon Valley 3

Another East Bay upset gave Amador Valley (8-8, 1-1 EBAL Mountain) a split in its first league series of the year.

Playing in Danville, the Dons scored in five different innings, adding an insurance run in the seventh to counter one from the Wolves in the bottom of the sixth that made it a 4-3 game.

Ryan Mello drove in the insurance run with a single in the seventh. Elliot De la Torre and George Fagundes also had run-scoring hits for AV. Aaron Solomon, who had three hits, scored on a wild pitch in the second, and Kingston Smith had an RBI groundout.

Fagundes had four hits to lead all hitters.

Colton Fitzgibbon hit a solo home run for SRV (9-5-2, 1-1), and Jake Tsunemoto drove in Jacob Quinto with a double in the sixth. Tsunmoto also had a run-scoring single in the second, plating Brent Del Barrio.

SOFTBALL

Capuchino 10, No. 11 King's Academy 7 (8)

Capuchino's roller-coaster season found another upswing on Friday, as the Mustangs knocked off TKA in Sunnyvale thanks to an offensive outburst.

With Northwestern signee Katia Nesper not pitching, Cap (6-7, 3-3 PAL Bay) took advantage with seven runs in the first three innings.

TKA (7-6, 4-4) brought its bats too and answered with six runs in the third. The Knights tied the game 7-7 in the bottom of the seventh on Sarah Fuller's RBI double that scored Sophie Giles.

But Capuchino took charge again in extras, as Brianna Lopiccolo's three-run triple plated Kaitlyn Staff, Lily Thomas and Dana Motroni to give the Mustangs the win in eight innings.

Loppicolo finished with four RBIs. Madison Su drove in three for TKA and Sophie Giles plated a pair.

No. 5 Willow Glen 2, Gilroy 1

Willow Glen (12-3, 6-0) lived on the edge to remain unbeaten in Blossom Valley Athletic League Mt. Hamilton Division play on Friday in Gilroy, scoring once each in the fourth and fifth innings and holding on down the stretch to win.

The Rams scored both runs on defensive errors. Alanna Clincy scored the tying run in the fourth on a passed ball, and Bella Medina scored on a would-be pop fly that was mishandled by the Gilroy second baseman.

Gilroy collected its lone run in the second on a single by Lalita Solis, which scored Ariel Gustamantes after a misplay in right field.

Kayla Valtscheff got the win in the circle for Willow Glen, pitching five innings with just the one unearned run allowed on three hits with no walks and nine strikeouts.

Clincy got the save with two perfect innings to close out the game, including four strikeouts.

Olive Burke had a strong day in the circle for Gilroy (4-11, 2-4), allowing one earned run on just one hit with five walks and five strikeouts.

Willow Glen will now prepare to welcome in No. 2 St. Francis for a showcase nonleague game on Saturday in San Jose.
