San Juan Hills’ softball team blended its depth with a few other key ingredients Thursday at Dana Hills.
The results were impressive.
The Stallions showed their poise and teamwork to defeat Dana Hills 13-3 in a Sea View League game.
Seattle-committed pitcher Leeloo Narvaez returned from a foot injury to combine with freshmen Grace Kumpel and Brynn Mesnick on a six-hitter.
Senior shortstop Grace Poyner went 3 for 5 with two RBIs to pace an 11-hit attack.
San Juan Hills (17-3-1 overall, 4-0 league), ranked No. 18 in Orange County, scored 10 unanswered runs after trailing 2-0.
“We support each other,” Poyner said. “We’re really good under pressure. We were down in the first couple innings and then we came back. Once one person starts (the offense), the rest follows.”
San Juan Hills took advantage of Dana Hills’ struggles on a couple of fly balls to send 12 batters to the plate in the third inning and score six runs.
The Stallions added four runs in the fourth.
Leadoff batter Kylie Vaughn had two hits to help pace the attack.
Narvaez pitched 1 1/3 innings before giving way to Kumpel (11-1), who pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the win. Mesnick pitched the final four innings.
“We have some (pitching) depth,” said Narvaez, who pitched for the first time since March 11. “A lot of our pitchers work different things so it’s good. It confuses the batters, throws them off. I think this staff is just working together really well.”
San Juan Hills’ lineup featured four freshmen.
Mesnick batted cleanup and went 1 for 2 with three walks. Freshman Elle Slater played catcher and had a hit. Freshman Kyra Robinson drove in two runs as the designated player.
“The future looks bright,” said second-year San Juan Hills coach Jeremey Wooten, whose team is aiming for its first playoff appearance since 2022.
Riley Richardson went 2 for 4 with two doubles and stole home in the first inning to help lead Dana Hills (9-6, 3-2), which has been ranked in the county Top 25.
Dana Hills sophomore Peyton Prince pitched five innings and hit a solo home run, her second, in the sixth.
“Peyton has kept us in games, which is helpful,” second-year Dana Hills coach Margo Botelho said. “San Juan Hills has a strong freshman class. They’re playing really well right now.”
“We’re in the process of building (our) program back up,” the coach added.
