Local Roundup: Vacaville boys volleyball clinches at least a share of first MEL title
The Vacaville High School boys volleyball team captured at least a share of the program's first-ever Monticello Empire League title after sweeping Rodriguez 25-19, 25-22, 25-22 on Wednesday.
The Bulldogs are now 15-7 overall and 10-1 in the MEL. They can claim sole possession of the crown with a win over Sacramento on Monday.
In last year's inaugural season, Vacaville went 9-10 overall and 7-4 in the MEL, good enough for third place behind Vanden (12-0) and River City (10-2).
Vanden 3, Pioneer 0
The Vanden High School boys volleyball team served up a sweep on Wednesday, dispatching Pioneer 25-20, 25-13, 25-23.
Senior Jaden Fiel led the Vikings in both kills (eight) and digs (13), while juniors Tony Chaihanchanchai and Niles Munstermann dished out 11 assists apiece.
Vanden improved to 9-15 overall and 7-2 in the MEL. The Vikings could split the league title with Vacaville if they win out and Sacramento upsets the Bulldogs.
Vanden will face River Valley on Friday before closing out the season with three league matches in three days. The Vikings will begin the stretch against Rodriguez on Monday.
Vacaville Christian 3, Mesa Verde 1
The Vacaville Christian High School boys volleyball team moved into a tie for first place in the Sierra Delta League after defeating Mesa Verde 25-22, 22-25, 25-23, 25-22 on Wednesday.
The Falcons are now 10-10 overall and 6-2 in the SDL. They are tied with Lindhurst (6-2) atop the standings and hold a one-game lead over second-place Mesa Verde (5-3) with two league matches remaining.
Vacaville Christian will face Woodland on Friday before resuming league play against Woodland Christian on Monday.
SoftballWill C. Wood 7, River City 1
Every hitter in the Will C. Wood High School softball team's lineup collected at least one hit in a 7-1 win over River City on Wednesday.
Senior Josselyn Alvarez led the Wildcats with two hits, a double and two RBI, while junior Emily Rivera chipped in two hits and one RBI. Freshman Sophia Criswell earned the win in the circle, striking out six while allowing four hits, one walk and one earned run in six innings.
