Mt. SAC Relays to feature some of San Gabriel Valley's top track and field athletes

One week after the prestigious Arcadia Invitational, several of the San Gabriel Valley's top track and field athletes will be competing in the 66th annual Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut.

The high school portion of the meet is spread over two days - Friday and Saturday.

Some of the SGV's top distance runners will compete Friday night.

Arcadia's Charlotte Hopkins, who owns the CIF Southern Section's fifth-best time (4 minutes, 49.79 seconds) in the girls 1,600 meters, will compete in Friday's 1-mile invitational.

La Serna's Maya Hoxie, La Mirada's Lauren Gutierrez and West Covina's Becky Osorio will compete in the girls 3,200 invitational. Of the three, Hoxie has the best mark this season, having run 10:58.06 in the Condor Invitational in February.

La Serna's Erick DeLeon will compete in the boys 1-mile invitational. DeLeon has run 4:14.22 in the 1,600 meters. DeLeon will also run Saturday in the 800 invitational, where his time of 1:52.17 is second best in the CIF-SS this season.

In the boys 3,200, two La Serna runners, Will Quatro and Thomas Barrera, and Glendora's Brady Bertsch will be among the field. Quatro has the SGV's top mark this season (9:14.26), which he ran at the Hi-Racer Meet of Champions in March.

The bulk of the races take place Saturday.

The girls 800 invitational will include Monrovia's Isla Terrill and La Serna's Xiomara Lewis.

Terrill, who also is a strong 3,200 runner, has a top-10 mark in the CIF-SS in the 800, having run a 2:11.30 in March. She ran 2:11.69 last week at Arcadia. Lewis is also among the top runners in the section with a personal best of 2:12.34 that she ran earlier this season.

Glendora junior Riley Lightbourne qualified for the boys 200 invitational race. Lightbourne had his personal-best time of 21.11 in the 200 during a dual meet with Claremont. That is the fifth-fastest 200 time in the CIF-SS this season. This will be the most-talented field he has ever competed against.

Walnut senior Brenden Neeley will compete in the boys 110 hurdles invitational. Neeley ran a 13.94 at the Downey Invitational, which was the fifth-fastest time in the CIF-SS this season. Neeley finished sixth at the Arcadia Invitational last week in the invite race, finishing in 14.30. He will be looking to improve on that showing this week.

The SGV's top pole vaulter, sophomore Braeden Yokoyama from Rio Hondo Prep, will also be competing at Mt. SAC. Yokoyama is the son of Brian Yokoyama, who is the director of Mt. SAC Athletic special events and was a longtime Mt. SAC track coach who specialized in pole vaulting.

Braeden Yokoyama turned in a personal best of 14 feet, 8 inches at the Arcadia Invitational, which was good for 13th place against a loaded invitational field. Yokoyama has the 11th best mark in the CIF-SS this season.

Covina's Sofia Jara is the top long jumper and triple jumper in the SGV. Lara will compete in the Mt. SAC invitational triple jump, where she has the fifth-best mark in the CIF-SS this season at 38-9. Lara will compete in the seeded competition for the long jump.

Damien's Malachi McFarland and St. Francis' Tyler Ostrom will compete in the seeded 100 meters. Ostrom will also run in the seeded 200. McFarland's time of 10.56 in the 100 is the top mark in the SGV this season.

St. Lucy's Jayda Aikens will compete in the girls seeded 100. Aitkens has the SGV's best mark (11.85) in the 100 this year.

West Covina's Vance Davis, one of the area's top football standouts, will compete in the 110 hurdles seeded race.

In seeded field events: La Mirada's Daniel Morales, boys discus; La Mirada's Maria Cuevas, girls discus; and La Serna's Alma Monreal, girls shot put.
