7-run outburst fuels Cabrillo's softball win over West Valley | Local Roundup

Cabrillo College's softball team produced a seven-run third inning and held on to stun host West Valley 7-6 in Coast Conference action Tuesday.

The second-place Vikings (33-4 overall, 9-3) scored five unanswered runs over the final two innings to make things close, but Seahawks pitcher Makayla Ogan came on in relief and picked up the save.

Kaylen Wingerd had a doubled and two RBI for the fourth-place Seahawks (28-8, 8-4). Janessa De La Cruz had a hit, run, and one RBI, and Cameron Llamas, Bailey Fulton, Ariyah Morgan, and Grace Stryker each had a walk, RBI, and run scored. Charileen Pauneto and Renee Parker each had a hit and run scored.

April Price had three hits and two RBI to lead the Vikings.

Danielle Keller pitched 5 2/3 innings and earned the win. The VIkings' Anastasia Marquez pitched two innings and took her first loss.

Cabrillo plays at Ohlone in Fremont on Thursday at 3 p.m.

High school softball

At Aptos 12, Santa Cruz 4: Junior Nova Neu had two hits, including a home run, three RBI, and scored twice in the Mariners' SCCAL win Tuesday.

Sophomore Gwen Vaca had three hits, including a double, one RBI, and scored twice for the Mariners (13-4, 6-0). Freshman Angie Lopez had two hits, one RBI, and scored twice. Junior Kalina Healy had two hits, two RBI, and scored a run. Freshman Natalie Arreola had two hits and scored twice. Junior Emma Burgueno had a hit and scored twice, and classmate Mya Najera-White had a hit and two RBI.

Najera-White gave up five hits and struck out 13 batters in her complete-game win.

On Thursday at 4:30 p.m., Aptos hosts Harbor, and Santa Cruz (2-9, 1-5) plays at Scotts Valley.

At Soquel 6, Scotts Valley 4: Freshman Hailey Leimas had two hits, including a home run, one walk, three RBI, and scored a run in the Knights' SCCAL win Tuesday.

Junior Katie Niizawa had a hit and scored twice for the Knights (11-5, 4-2).

Senior Jazzy Phillips had two hits and scored twice for the Falcons (3-7-1, 2-3). Senior Sierra Finsthwait and sophomore Jillian Oing each had a hit and two RBI. Junior Chloe Kent also had two hits.

On Thursday at 4:30 p.m., Soquel hosts SLV, and Scotts Valley hosts Harbor.

At SLV 15, Harbor 4; 5 inn.: Grace Purtscher had four hits, four RBI, and scored a run in the Cougars' SCCAL win Tuesday.

Bailey Filice had two hits, three RBI, and scored a run for the Cougars (7-5-1, 4-2). Ray Alvarez had three hits, one RBI, and scored a run, and Elie Colby had a hit and scored four runs. Ida Robertello had two hits, one RBI, and scored twice, and Audrey Jouglet had two hits and two RBI.

Mackenzie Williams-Zamora had a hit and three RBI for the Pirates (2-6, 0-5). Addysin Schaefer had two hits and scored twice, and Sofia Monroe had a hit and scored twice.

Elie Colby pitched four innings and earned the win.

On Thursday at 4:30 p.m., SLV plays at Soquel, and Harbor plays at Scotts Valley.

At Hollister 10, Watsonville 0; 6 inn.: Sophomore Isabella Ruiz had two of the Wildcatz's four hits in their PCAL Gabilan Division loss Tuesday.

Sophomore Ashley Callen doubled for the Wildcatz (1-11-1, 1-6), and freshman Samantha Rivera singled.

Winning pitcher Kaliyah Ceja gave up four hits and three walks over five innings. Senior Amelia Martinez took the loss.

Freshman Nevaeh Charles had two triples, four RBI, and scored twice for the Haybalers (13-4, 6-1). Chavez had two hits, including a solo home run, and scored twice.

Watsonville hosts Palma (9-6, 4-3) on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

High school baseball

Soquel 14, at Scotts Valley 4: Senior Cash Moran had three hits, two RBI, and scored three runs in the Knights' SCCAL win Tuesday.

Senior Trey Sousa had two doubles, two RBI, and scored twice for the Knights (13-3, 5-1). Senior Connor Corlett homered, drove in two runs, and scored twice. Senior Brady Downs had a hit and three RBI, and senior Hudson Summerrill had a hit, two RBI, and scored a run. Jake Escalante doubled, drove in a run, and scored twice. Sophomore Anthony Skinner had two hits and scored a run.

Junior Rex Thompson had two hits, including a home run, and four RBI for the Falcons (5-10, 2-4). Junior Owen Martin had a hit and scored twice, and juniors Nick Acton and Monte Jordan each had two hits.

Corlett pitched three innings and earned the win.

The teams square off again at Soquel on Friday at 4 p.m.

Aptos 8, at Santa Cruz 1: Junior Cole McGillicuddy had three hits, including a double and his sixth home run of the season, three RBI, and scored three runs in the Mariners' SCCAL win Tuesday.

Dom Castillo had two hits and scored twice for the Mariners (8-3, 4-1), and Dylan Bergh had a hit and two RBI.

McGillicuddy gave up two hits and walk over five shutout innings and earned the win. He struck out six batters.

The teams square off again at Aptos on Friday at 4 p.m.

At Harbor 13, SLV 5: The Pirates smacked 20 hits in their SCCAL win Tuesday.

Joey Raffo had three hits, including a double and home run, two RBI and scored three runs for the Pirates (11-5, 4-2). Noah Solano had two doubles, three RBI, and scored twice.

McKinley Jelmini, Russell Riddick, Sammy Harvey, Pierre Bell and Evan Lampel each had two hits.

Noah Carter scored twice for the Cougars (1-15, 0-6). Senior Brody Egner had a hit and RBI, and Jesse Fulkerson had a hit and run scored.

Winning pitcher Logan Felich pitched five innings.

Harbor plays at SLV on Thursday at 4 p.m.

Boys volleyball

Harbor 3, at Scotts Valley 0: The Pirates earned a 21-25, 25-27, 15-25 in SCCAL action Tuesday.

Senior setter Troy Thompson had 18 assists and three blocks for the Falcons. Senior outside Will Shanks had four digs, three kills, and two aces. Freshman opposite Leo Haguishi Rosoff had eight kills and five digs.

On Thursday at 6:30 p.m., Harbor hosts Mount Madonna, while Scotts Valley hosts Aptos.

Mount Madonna 3, at SLV 1: Nikowa D'Costa-Hemp had 37 kills, and the Hawks won 25-22, 20-25, 25-22, 25-22 in their SCCAL match Tuesday.

Hans Hagge served for 17 points including four aces for the Hawks (12-9, 6-2).

Mount Madonna plays at Santa Cruz on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. SLV (8-12, 3-5) hosts Santa Cruz on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Boys tennis

At Soquel 4, Scotts Valley 3: Torrin Miller edged Aditya Hannon 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8) at No. 2 singles to clinch the Knights' SCCAL win Tuesday.

Soquel's Hudson Ward won at No. 1 singles, and the Knights received wins from Matteo Arnulfo and Lucas Swanson, and Americo Castillo and Miles Kelly in doubles action. Arnulfo and Swanson prevailed 6-0, 3-6, 1-0 (10-4).

The Falcons earned singles wins from Colin Johnston and Simon Papadopolous, and a doubles win from Nate Wexler and Sam Galli.

On Thursday at 4 p.m., Soquel hosts Aptos, and Scotts Valley plays at Harbor.

Santa Cruz 5, at Aptos 2: Tenzin Fathman and Stellan Wu each dropped up one game in their straight sets singles wins, and the Cardinals swept doubles action in their SCCAL victory Tuesday.

Ian Burchell and Oscar Sapunor, and Owen Vaughan and Aldon Fairchild won doubles matches for the Cardinals. Santa Cruz won by default at No. 3 doubles.

SLV's two wins came in the tightest matches: Ben Zaretsky beat Jeremy Arulanantham 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 at No. 1 singles, and Dylan Bray beat Rowan Elfers 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8) at No. 4 singles.

On Thursday at 4 p.m., Santa Cruz plays at SLV, and Aptos plays at Soquel.

Harbor 5, at SLV 2: Abraham Bachar, Louis Dubois, and Zabel Oatey earned singles wins in straight sets in the Pirates' SCCAL victory Tuesday.

Harbor's Cameron Carlock and Jaden Laughlin, and Damian Alvarez and Mason Ruiz earned doubles wins.

Zeurin Hickey won at No. 4 singles for the Cougars, and Finn O'Brien and Eli Rogerson won at No. 2 doubles.

On Thursday at 4 p.m., Harbor hosts Scotts Valley, and SLV hosts Santa Cruz.

Boys golf

At Aptos 227, Santa Cruz 257: Junior Nick Bjorn shot even-par 36 on the front nine at Seascape Golf Club to lead the unbeaten Mariners to the SCCAL win on Tuesday.

Freshmen Brayden Wilson (41), Jack Garvey (47), Jameson Dudley (51), and junior Jack Churchill (52) also scored for the Mariners (9-0).

Gavin Eaton (45), Bodie Weld (50), Fischer Howard (51), Will McGrath (55), and Santiago Toledo (56) scored for the Cardinals.

On Thursday at 4:30 p.m., Aptos faces SLV at Boulder Creek Golf & Country

Club, and Santa Cruz faces Scotts Valley at DeLaveaga Golf Course.

Harbor 231, at SLV 237: The Pirates' Kyler Samples and Cougars' Lochlin Bischofberger each shot 39 on the front nine at DeLaveaga Golf Course to share medalist honors in the SCCAL match Tuesday.

Cade Moseley (47), Gunther Kreueger (45), Nico Marinovic (49), and Cody Veitch (51) also scored for the Pirates.

Garret Dahlen (45), Tanner Brewer (47), Carson Chubb (51), and Isaac Skinner (55) also scored for the Cougars.

Boys lacrosse

MVC 11, at Monterey 2: Junior attacker Oliver Friesell had five goals in the Mustangs' PCAL Mission Division win Tuesday.

Senior midfielder Zach Binder had four goals for the Mustangs (7-3, 5-1). Junior attacker Everett Olmstead had two goals and an assist, and sophomore attacker Tyler Bennett made five assists.

Junor goalie Garret Hawkins made 10 saves for MVC, which hosts Pacific Grove (4-6, 0-6) on Monday at 5:30 p.m.

College baseball

Hartnell 6, at Cabrillo 4: Lucas Durand had two hits, including a triple, one RBI, and scored a run in the Seahawks' Coast Conference South Division loss Tuesday.

Ferris Vitali doubled and had two of the Seahawks' five hits, and Jayson Schmeisser scored twice.

Ethan Stelzer had three hits and scored three runs for the Panthers (20-16, 8-8).

Winning pitcher Sam Sellars struck out nine batters over seven innings. Easton Vargas earned a two-inning save. Seahawks middle releiver Isaiah Giambruno took the loss.

Cabrillo (16-20, 4-12) plays at Gavilan (13-21, 5-10) on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
