After four fights, Jordan Fuentes made his debut in Fresno and he packed a punch in the first round.
Fuentes, 19, didn’t disappoint boxing fans in attendance at the Save Mart Center winning in 51 seconds in the first round by knockout over Steven Cruz.
Quick work for Fuentes who could be the next stardom boxer from the Fresno-area, following Jose Ramirez and Richard Torrez Jr., who both were watching.
Fuentes (5-0, 2 KOs) knocked down Cruz twice, with a hard punch striking the head. The second knock down came when Fuentes kept his offense in high gear by connecting on an upper hook that sent Cruz to the ropes. He continued with right and left combinations that put Cruz to one knee and the referee waved off the fight.
“He stumbled and I just knew I could finish the fight from there,” Fuentes said. “I’ve been (wanting) to get a little more aggressive there.”
Fuentes delighted the crowd as soon as the bell sounded.
Fuentes, signed to Golden Boy Promotions, entered the ring with purple and gold trunks in memory of his sister, Jolissa, and cousin, Skye Banda.
He kept their memory on his gloves.
While it’s unknown when Fuentes will fight again in 2025, he’s just hoping to be the next big Fresno-area star to do well in boxing, following Ramirez and Torrez.
Ramirez (29-3, 18 KOs) is a former unified champion at light welterweight champion and Torrez is 13-0 with 11 knockouts.
“(Ramirez) is a big part of why we throw shows in Fresno,” he said. “He opened big doors for us around the Central Valley, along with Richard Torrez. I just hope to be the next one to open the doors.”
