Clovis 9-under baseball team wins Ripken regional
The Clovis Babe Ruth 9U All-Stars continued its winning ways this past weekend, capturing the Cal Ripken Pacific Southwest Regional title.
The Clovis team, which won the state title a month ago, mercy-ruled its first three opponents (Elk Grove; Vernal, Utah; and Carbon, Utah) in pool play at the tournament in Kingsburg to earn the top seed in the semifinals. There, Clovis held off Rohnert Park 14-13 in extra innings Friday before beating defending regional champion Bakersfield 4-3 for the title Saturday.
The Clovis players are: Caleb Calhoun, Jaden Carrillo, Tyler Cheney, Dominic DeCanio, Edwin Estrada, Eli Henderson, Marcel Leal, Brody McAvoy, Ty Miller, Matthew Preuss and Joey Ziese. The team is managed by Doug Cheney, with Shawn McAvoy as coach.
The title marked the top of the ladder for the Clovis 9U All-Stars. Starting at age 10, regional winners advance to the Cal Ripken World Series. The Visalia 10U All-Stars will represent the Pacific Southwest at this year’s World Series tournament, Aug. 8-15 in Jonesboro, Ark.
An earlier version of this story incorrectly listed coach Shawn McAvoy as one of the players on the team.
