California Chrome likely out for rest of year with injury; retirement next?
California Chrome, the 2014 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner bred at Harris Farms in Coalinga, will likely miss the remainder of the year after suffering a bruised cannon bone.
California Chrome was scheduled to run in the Arlington Million turf race outside of Chicago next month but was diagnosed with the injury while being vetted out for a possible sale to breeders, according to trainer Art Sherman.
“He’ll be fine,” Sherman told DRF.com. “It’s not life-threatening or anything, but it looks like he’ll be out for the rest of the year.”
California Chrome finished second in the Dubai World Cup in March and then shipped to England where he was to run at the prestigious Royal Ascot meet in June, but was ruled out of the race after suffering a reported bruised foot. He then shipped to Arlington Park where he was to run in the Million.
