Local boxing: Jose Ramirez fight card confirmed; Aleman show set for Fourth
Avenal pro boxer Jose Ramirez and former multi-division world champion Nonito Donaire will headline “Victory at The Venetian,” a fight card in China that will be broadcast on the July 18 edition of Solo Boxeo Tecate.
Ramirez’s corner had pointed to a July bout in China in the days leading up to his most recent fight, a fifth-round knockout of Denver’s Rob Frankel on May 9 at Selland Arena. But it wasn’t until this week that Top Rank confirmed Ramirez’s opponent and other details of the card.
The Venetian Macao’s Cotai Arena will host the card, with a same-day taped broadcast at 11 p.m. EDT and PDT on UniMás. Ramírez (14-0, 11 KOs) will open the telecast in an eight-round super lightweight bout against Japan’s Ryusei Yoshida (26-7, 13 KOs).
Donaire (34-3, 22 KOs), of the Philippines, faces France’s Anthony Settoul (20-3, eight KOs) in a 10-round super bantamweight battle.
The undercard will include Argentina’s Cesar Cuenca (47-0, two KOs) taking on Ik Yang for the vacant International Boxing Federation junior welterweight title. Yang (19-0, 14 KOs) will attempt to become China’s second professional boxer to win a world title.
▪ Aleman Boxing Fresno will host its sixth annual U.S. Independence Day Championships at noon Saturday. There are 25 scheduled matches, featuring amateurs from throughout California. Tickets are $15, with the club at 1229 N. Sierra Vista, near Chestnut and Olive.
