Aleman Boxing’s Berber, 12, wins Junior Olympic title
Fresno’s Aleman Boxing produced three medalists — including a champion in America Berber — during the U.S. Junior Olympic National Championships in West Virginia.
Berber, 12, captured gold in the girls’ 13-14-year-old, 125-pound division with a three-round unanimous decision over Ohio’s Diamond Long.
A seventh-grader at Kings Canyon Middle School, Berber opened the championship bout with a pair of left hooks and a combination that led to a standing eight count. Long recovered, but Berber controlled the rest of the bout.
Jesus Flores dropped a split decision in the boys’ 13-14, 90-pound final, while Andrew Garcia was third in the boys’ 13-14, 125-pound division.
▪ Fresno’s Marcos Hernandez, another Aleman fighter, improved to 6-0 as a professional with a six-round unanimous decision over Santa Ana’s Gabe Lopez during a 154-pound bout in Costa Mesa.
