Central California boxer inks deal with Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions
Evan Sanchez of Parlier met former boxing champion Oscar De La Hoya this week.
It wasn’t because he was seeking an autograph.
It was all business for Sanchez when he signed with Golden Boy Promotions on Tuesday.
The first thing that De Loya told Sanchez?
“ ’Cute guy, good smile,” Sanchez said of the interaction with De La Hoya. “He was telling me I’m going to be dangerous in the weight class and to come ready.”
Sanchez, listed at 6 feet, will fight at 147s and will make his Golden Boy Promotions debut Feb. 14 against an opponent to be named in Anaheim.
Sanchez, 21, is 6-0 and made his pro debut in 2017 in Tijuana.
Five of his fights ended in a knockout with the latest coming in November in Los Angeles.
He has kept busy sparring with others including former world champion Mikey Garcia.
Plenty went Sanchez’s way to earn the deal with Golden Boy. It doesn’t hurt that Sanchez’s manager is De La Hoya’s older brother.
“I fell in love with the sport,” Sanchez said. “I started fighting more and more and I needed to turn pro. ... My next goal is to try to get a fight out here in Fresno.”
