Fresno soccer clubs roll on; Pete Dern tennis tourney raises $10,000
High-scoring Fresno took on a Southern California Seahorses club that has had all kinds of trouble putting the ball in the net and the results were as expected late Friday night.
Even without a goal from either of its top two points producers, the Fuego rolled to a 3-0 victory at Chukchansi Park as Greg Antognoli, Christian Chaney and Sven Ricke all scored to keep Fresno atop the Southwest Division in the Premier Development League.
Ricke’s goal was his third of the season, while Antognoli and Chaney each scored their first for Fresno (3-1-2), who with 11 points remained two ahead of Ventura County — also a 3-0 winner over Burlingame.
Fresno visits Mountain Division club Las Vegas, 0-0-2 headed into Saturday’s game at FC Tucscon, on June 6.
▪ Local clubs made it a sweep Friday, with the Fresno Freeze of the Women’s Premier Soccer League beating Tottenham Hotspur East Bay 5-1 in the opener. The first-year Freeze have outscored the opposition 18-2 in their perfect 3-0 start.
Tourney raises $10,000 for Dern
Dean Petty and Ryan Stotland beat Brian Wright and Drew Hoskins 6-4, 6-3 on Friday in the men’s doubles final of a Copper River County Club tennis tournament that served as a fundraiser for severely burned Fresno Fire Capt. Pete Dern.
Petty is the head tennis pro at Fig Garden Swim & Racquet Club, while Stotland is the Fresno State women’s tennis coach.
The men’s 4.0 division (50 and older) title went to Cliff VanderBeek and Don Mills, who topped Dan Rhoads and Ted Reynoso 7-5, 6-4 in the final.
The tournament raised nearly $10,000 for Dern, a 25-year veteran of the Fire Department who suffered burns to 70% of his body when he fell through the roof of a burning garage in late March.
