Members of the Central Valley Cricket Club of Fresno and the Bakersfield Lions met on a chilly Sunday at Sierra Bicentennial Park in Clovis for a friendly practice match.
The teams are preparing for the start of the Northern California Cricket Association season. Twenty teams begin play in the second week of April, all pointing toward the championship game in San Jose with a purse of $20,000.
Cricket, a sport that’s popular in Asia and former English Commonwealth countries, is similar to baseball in that a batsman (known as the striker) attempting to hit a “pitch” (delivered by a bowler) during an inning. That’s where the similarities end, however.
