Fresno State seeks to strengthen Valley communities with education partnerships | Opinion
As we embark on a new academic year, I am keenly aware of the educational ecosystem that powers our region — one built on friendships that facilitate institutional collaboration and partnerships. At Fresno State, we firmly believe that education promotes a vibrant and healthy community, hence why we nurture and invest in our most precious resource: our students and families.
The lessons taught in the classroom come alive and take flight when applied in the real world. As a professor in the classroom for over a decade, I saw firsthand how my students saw the value of the lessons when they volunteered in our community. By fostering partnerships between Fresno State, the Fresno County Superintendent of Schools, local school districts and community organizations, I’m confident we can create a network that provides our students with the opportunity to impact our community.
Equally essential is the synergy and collaboration between our community college partners and Fresno State. Community colleges represent the opportunity of a lifetime for many of our students, as these institutions serve as a vital bridge to higher education for a diverse spectrum of learners. I am profoundly grateful for the partnership between Fresno State and the State Center Community College District. Together, we can streamline the transfer process, ensuring a seamless educational pathway for students pursuing higher education. Forming part of the two systems will also provide our students with a depth of experience and a broader understanding of our region’s social and economic opportunities.
In an effort to strengthen our K-12 partnerships, we recently unveiled Bulldog Bound, Fresno State’s guaranteed admission pathway program. Bulldog Bound offers a clear and efficient road map to a college degree. Through this program, we partner with local school districts, working hand-in-hand with students and parents to provide ongoing support and resources starting as early as ninth grade.
Bulldog Bound is not just about admission; it represents a commitment to the success and well-being of our students throughout their academic journey. By engaging with students early on, we can provide guidance, mentorship and the necessary tools to navigate the college application process successfully and provide the resources to see them through graduation. We aim to demonstrate the breath and promise of higher education and empower students to envision a future where their dreams can become a reality.
As we plan collectively for the future of our community, Fresno State leads in embracing our community partnerships in education, and thus, collectively, we create a tightly woven tapestry of opportunity for our Valley communities. What will happen when more than 24,000 students go out into the community in internships and volunteer opportunities? The answer is clear: Our students will develop a deeper sense of accomplishment, while our community will be enriched by our students’ talents, creative energy and bright ideas.
Fresno State and our partners stand ready to lead the way. We invite our community to join us in creating a legacy of educational excellence where the dreams of our children can be realized and our community can flourish.
It’s the collective partnership that forges a brighter tomorrow for our Valley — one built on the unwavering commitment to supporting the next generation of regional and world leaders.
