Kevin Durant to the Warriors? Rest of the NBA would quake in their hightops

Kevin Durant – the hottest NBA free agent – greets kids as he was introduced with the other 11 members of the U.S. Olympic basketball team in New York on Monday. If Durant chooses to leave the Thunder to join the Warriors this offseason, it could be game over for the rest of the NBA.

Enter the Warzone, sports scattershot from a scatterbrain.

▪ Trying to envision the Warriors with Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green AND free agent Kevin Durant in the starting lineup with Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston coming off the bench.

Center? Heck, Tanner Giddings could be the starting center on that squad.

▪ Gut feeling: Durant stays in Oklahoma City and makes one more go with Russell Westbrook. But if Durant opts for Golden State (or San Antonio), might as well skip the regular season and proceed directly to the NBA Finals.

▪ The U.S. men’s Olympic basketball team features 11 of the best players in the world – plus Harrison Barnes.

▪ The Bulldog Express, a RV road show featuring coaches Tim DeRuyter, Rodney Terry, Terry Steiner and Jaime White and athletic director Jim Barko, made its first stop Monday morning at Danny’s Donuts in Caruthers.

Then it was on to Superior Dairy in Hanford.

Just add Taylor Bros Hot Dog Stand in Visalia, and all the food groups would be represented.

▪ Bulldogs fans who anxiously await those college football magazines to hit the newsstand may want to save their $7.95 this year.

Not unless they want to be seriously depressed …

▪ Example: Athlon Sports rates Fresno State No. 108 in FBS and picks the Bulldogs to finish fifth in the six-team Mountain West Conference West Division.

Could be worse. Could be Hawaii.

▪ Fresno State received an anonymous $1.5 million donation from a former football player for its stadium renovation project.

And, no, the donor’s last name doesn’t rhyme with jar or pilfer.

▪ The Knicks are a great landing spot for Marvelle Harris, Fresno State’s all-time leading scorer.

Why? Because you couldn’t name a Knicks shooting guard to save your life.

I ate my first grape the other day … never had a grape before.

Fresno State center Terrell Carter

▪ Speaking of thin, good to learn Bulldogs center Terrell Carter is taking this diet and exercise thing seriously and has dropped below 300 pounds.

Carter even ate a grape, for the first time in his life. Don’t make fun. It took us 35 years to eat a Brussel sprout.

▪ In case you missed it, Saturday was the eighth anniversary of Fresno State winning the College World Series. Next June 25, it’ll be the ninth.

▪ First Great Britain exits the Euro, then England gets beat in soccer by Southern Greenland. Not a great week across the pond.

▪ Following England’s 2-1 loss to Iceland, ESPN soccer commentator Ian Darke declared, “This may be the biggest humiliation in their history ...”

The Charge of the Light Brigade boys are finally off the hook.

▪ Eight members of last year’s Triple-A champion Fresno Grizzlies have played in the majors this season for teams other than the Astros: Jonathan Villar, Alex Presley and Domingo Santana (Brewers); Brett Oberholtzer (Phillies); Robbie Grossman (Twins); Dan Straily (Reds); Matt Dominguez (Blue Jays); and Ronald Torreyes (Yankees).

No wonder that club went 84-59.

▪ A buddy who lives outside Sacramento sent a text grousing about how terrible the River Cats are this season.

We know. Trust us, we know.

▪ For no particular reason: Sylvester Seay

▪ Hope we look as good as Fresno hot rod legend Blackie Gejeian when we turn 90.

Heck, who are we kidding? Half his age, and we don’t look as good as Gejeian does now.

▪ The June 16 column on President Obama’s visit to Yosemite elicited a couple dozen responses, including an email from John C. saying it “brought tears to my eyes.”

Whether they were tears of joy, or the searing pain our columns typically cause, he didn’t specify.

Looking for a shoulder to cry on? Might want to try somewhere else besides 559-441-6218, marekw@fresnobee.com or @MarekTheBee. He’s a meanie.
