Warszawski: Rams (huzzah), Chargers (bleh) look likely for Los Angeles move
Enter the Warzone, pigskin possessed.
▪ Twenty years after the Rams and Raiders both left Los Angeles, one of those teams is on the verge of returning.
Hint: It won’t be the Raiders.
▪ Rams owner Stan Kroenke is financing the Inglewood stadium, so you know his relocation request will be approved by 75% of the league’s owners.
Raiders owner Mark Davis can’t finance a new cellphone, so you know his won’t be.
▪ More and more it appears the Chargers will be the second NFL team in Los Angeles – where they’re sure to be welcomed by the local populace with a collective shrug.
▪ Following Alabama’s latest triumph Monday night, seven of the last 10 national champions have been coached by Nick Saban (four) or Urban Meyer (three).
Just in case you thought coaching in college football wasn’t that important.
▪ Biggest takeaway from the NFL playoffs opening weekend: Bengals never change their stripes.
▪ If Vontaze Burfict had just stayed in the tunnel after that interception, the Bengals would’ve won their first playoff game in 36 years.
▪ As a senior at Centennial-Corona High in 2008, Burfict had 15 tackles during a 42-7 shellacking of Clovis West at The Vet.
Betcha Jeff Tuel remembers …
▪ Days after declaring General Manager Trent Baalke would be in charge of the 49ers’ coaching search, Jed York personally has conducted every interview.
When your capacity for truth is as low as Jed’s, might as well keep plunging.
Trent’s role is to find the next head coach
49ers CEO Jed York on Jan. 4
▪ Glass half-full view of the 49ers’ coaching search: No matter who the team hires it’ll be an improvement over the last guy.
▪ Of course, Jim Tomsula will be paid $14 million for his one season as 49ers coach – whether or not he gets another job.
So maybe he isn’t such a doofus after all.
▪ Following his best half since last year’s playoffs, Davante Adams sustained a knee injury that likely will keep him sidelined until next season.
Nothing fair about the NFL.
▪ Fellow ex-Bulldog Tyler Johnson (knee) was questionable for Miami’s game against the 35-2 Warriors. Less so, Johnson’s NBA career.
▪ Three months should be long enough for the Fresno State men’s basketball team to find some consistency.
But so far, the only constant has been a lack thereof.
▪ Just when you thought Bulldogs women’s basketball might have a down year, Bego Faz Davalos (third in the nation at 3.6 blocks per game) says, “Get that stuff outta here.”
▪ Why did Jenna Prandini sign with Puma when she attends Swoosh U?
“I felt welcomed,” the track star from Clovis told our B.J. Anteola. “They want me to be their American female face of the company in the Olympics.”
Two excellent reasons.
▪ A doff of the cap to Fresno Athletic Hall of Famer Tim Simons, who is finally hanging up his whistle after 30 years of coaching.
No one did it better, or with more class.
▪ A name/job title combo no one but Dickens could make up: Gary Grief, Chairman of Powerball.
▪ Didn’t hear any Fresno rock radio stations playing David Bowie, which is what normally happens when a musician of his stature and influence dies.
Guess the computers couldn’t be reprogrammed in time.
▪ For no particular reason: Les Richter
▪ How many seasons until the producers of “Finding Bigfoot” feel compelled to change the name to “(Not) Finding Bigfoot?”
▪ High school basketball fans in Wisconsin are no longer allowed to chant “Air ball!” when someone on the opposing team attempts a shot that doesn’t hit iron or glass.
Because for developing minds, the truth is evidently too real.
The Warzone always tells the truth, even when he lies. Say goodnight to the bad guy at 559-441-6218, marekw@fresnobee.com or @MarekTheBee.
