Warszawski: Bochy’s choice of Kershaw more proof nothing is sacred

Dodgers right-hander Zack Greinke deservedly earned the All-Star start for the National League, but should Giants manager Bruce Bochy have stiffed him in the name of a good rivalry?

Enter the Warzone, a Midsummer Classic even in winter.

▪ The manager of the Giants chose a pitcher from the Dodgers to start the All-Star Game.

What’s next, Atticus Finch turning into a racist and bigot?

Oh.

▪ Zack Greinke hasn’t allowed a run in five starts and is equally stingy with his thoughts.

When a press conference moderator asked Greinke if he “wanted to say a few words” about starting the All-Star Game, the laconic right-hander responded: “No.”

▪ You thought we’d let an All-Star Game slip by without ripping Chris Berman?

Nope nope nope nope nope nope ... never!

▪ This week’s issue of Sports Illustrated features 25 different covers featuring members of the U.S. Women’s National Team.

One for every goal they scored against Japan.

▪ Novak Djokovic vs. Roger Federer in a Wimbledon final is always must-see TV, but this year the post-match speeches were better than the actual match.

▪ Eight of Serena Williams’ 21 Grand Slam titles have come after she turned 30. Remarkable in a sport where most players are washed up by 25.

▪ Fresno State is interviewing candidates for a new senior associate athletic director position that will oversee athletics fund-raising.

Because football stadiums don’t renovate themselves.

▪ One of those college football magazines ranked the Bulldogs as the 101st best team in the country.

Don’t think there are 51 bowl games, but we’ll check.

▪ Of all the Kenny Stabler stories that came out following his death from colon cancer, the one about he and his friends (probably) planting cocaine on a sports writer they didn’t like had to be the craziest.

It also helps explain why Stabler isn’t in the Hall of Fame.

▪ Stabler’s critics point out that he only had five great seasons, and they may be right. Except for the fact that we’re still talking about those five seasons 40 years later.

▪ Cliff Branch and Tom Flores also belong in the Hall of Fame, and you can make a good case for Jim Plunkett and Lester Hayes.

▪ Dez Bryant is threatening to sit out regular-season games unless the Cowboys give him a new contract by Wednesday.

The rest of America hopes both sides dig in their heels.

▪ Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher told his players that bars are “off limits” after two of them allegedly slugged women last week while out on the town.

Of course, neither Dalvin Cook nor De’Andre Johnson is 21. So bars should’ve been off limits already.

▪ Ohio State will enter fall practice with three of the country’s top starting quarterbacks: Braxton Miller, J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones.

Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer ought to do the gentlemanly thing and lend one of them to the Browns.

▪ “In the SEC,” Auburn coach Gus Malzahn says, “there are no off weeks.”

Nope. Just that game against Idaho you’re playing in November.

▪ Just when the Fresno Grizzlies were slipping, they won four of five in Sacramento to close out the first half.

Thank goodness they have the River Cats to kick around.

▪ California Chrome likely won’t race again this year — and perhaps never again — after x-rays detected a bone bruise in his hoof.

Guess that rules out the Big Fresno Fair.

▪ For no particular reason: Mike Tomczak

▪ BMX rider Jed Mildon became the first person to nail a quad backflip.

Now that’s a soaring achievement.

▪ Bills offensive line coach Aaron Kromer allegedly punched a boy in the face after confronting him and another boy over using unattended beach chairs left outside Kromer’s Florida home.

Unless those “boys” were both Florida State football players, his reaction was probably out of line.
