New GMO bill is a ‘sham’
On July 29, President Obama signed a bill to “label” genetically modified foods that was written by corporations, paid for by corporations and serves no one in this county but the biotech industry and corporations.
Just as Californian’s were brainwashed in 2012 by the biotech industry and Grocery Manufacturers’ Association to vote no on Prop. 37 to Label genetically modified foods, our legislators were bought to pass this sham bill.
This new law will NOT label genetically engineered foods with words but will use a QR code or an 1-800 telephone number. The law is not mandatory. There will be no enforcement. It will exempt most GMO ingredients. It is also discriminatory since it will require a smart phone to scan the code.
This new law violates states rights by nullifying Vermont’s labeling law that went into effect on July 1, and has been working beautifully. This is un-Constitutional. Our Sen. Dianne Feinstein voted for passage of the bill.
For anyone who still harbors any doubt, passage of this sham bill is proof that our democracy is broken. Our lawmakers answer to corporate America and not to us, the people who elect them.
