Pay no attention to that Second Amendment part about ‘well-regulated militia’

If I understand Jerrold Jensen correctly (Valley Voices July 14), the issue of gun control is actually an attempt by those who are “politically correct” to raise money.

It is not really a serious issue, since inner-city blacks kill more inner-city blacks than do white suburbanites kill each other, and only 21,175 used a gun to commit suicide, only 8,098 others were killed by handguns, shotguns and rifles. Strict Mexican restrictions do not prevent drug cartels killing people with firearms obtained by some unnamed magic and not by smuggling U.S.-made weapons and a whole lot of us die from all other causes than easily obtained guns.

The implication is that gun control in the U.S. will only be a real issue for “cynical old men” (and others of like mind) when guns kill more than all those other causes of death combined. And to hell with that part of the Second Amendment that speaks about a “well-regulated militia.”

P.S. I am good deal older than the cynical old man Mr. Jensen, a fact of no significance at all.
