Don’t let coast steal our doctors

The Central Coast is trying to steal our doctors, nurses, and medical technicians. Did you notice the full page ad in The Bee on June 19? I don’t blame them for trying to get the medical personnel they need. But we need to see it as a wake-up call.

We need to train medical personnel in great numbers, and we need to give them incentives to stay in the Valley. Heaven knows we can’t compete with the weather, the close proximity to beaches and the low crime rate of San Luis Obispo and many other areas of California.

One reason for this crisis is that people who had little money and no health insurance now have the opportunity, through expanded MediCal, to see doctors or other health professionals. With each new patient needing extra help due to years of neglect, the health providers are totally stressed.

And the extra paperwork doesn’t help. Let’s work on single-payer health care for all and put the money saved into medical scholarships, teachers and schools.
