Cass Sunstein’s June 5 column comparing the rise of Donald Trump to the rise of an authoritarian empire in the Star Wars movie prequels failed to mention an important fact – that authoritarianism can come in many different guises.
The economic authoritarianism espoused by Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders is no less dangerous than anything Donald Trump can offer. Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, the Libertarian Party presidential candidate, is by no means a perfect contender – I certainly don’t agree with everything he has to say – but he may present the best alternative to the various shades of authoritarianism currently being offered to us.
