Letters to the Editor

Long, hot, political summer

Recently in Albuquerque, Anaheim, San Diego and Burlingame, Donald Trump protesters waved foreign flags and threw burning Che Guevara T-shirts at mounted police.

They were able to push one frightened horse down to the ground. They threw bottles and rocks, chanted and dumped over trash cans. They were one cop car short of a Baltimore riot. We had unruly protesters here in Fresno as well.

I fear that by the November election, things will accelerate to the point of the senseless 1970 Kent State massacre with much blood spilled from both sides of the line. It will be hard to tell American cities from the streets of Iraq.

Those of you who smugly stand by because it is OK with you to do so at Trump rallies are advised to review Pastor Martin Niemöller’s words: “and then there was no one left to speak for me.”

It is going to be a very long summer.

Bob Francque, Clovis
