‘Traitor Joe’s’ move makes us sad
We central Fresnans, who with Friendly Flyer and shopping bag in hand have faithfully made the trek northeast to Blackstone and Barstow avenues, were disappointed to learn our beloved Trader Joe’s will move to the affluent northlands.
Why the management of this anchor store could not find it in its heart to occupy one of the many vacant stores along Shaw Avenue like the old Von’s at Marks and Shaw avenues is a mystery. Likewise, Olive Garden will be going northwest to Herndon Avenue and Highway 99. Do businesses, as a vital part of the community, have a role in meeting the general plan?
Businesses should follow the lead of the much maligned Walmart which moved into the vacant Mervyns at Blackstone and Ashlan avenues. Also, kudos to Smart & Final for filling the vacancy at Blackstone and Clinton. If Fresno is ever to limit urban sprawl and implement sustainable communities along the Blackstone and Shaw corridors, Fresno’s next mayor and city council and business leaders need to be on the same page to develop transportation corridors and livable communities with some reason to live and go there.
Very disappointed in you, “Traitor Joe.”
