Fresno High breast-feeding room is model for others
I would like to commend Fresno Unified School District, and especially Fresno High School, for making breast-feeding accommodations for their students and staff.
As a former teen mother, I know the importance of the Parent and Child Education program in Fresno Unified high schools and now as a registered dietitian nutritionist I know the importance of breast feeding. Breast-fed babies are more likely to be healthier, smarter and cheaper. There is no need to purchase bottles, formula and clean water. A healthy child is less likely to have to go to the doctor due to illness, which keeps the mother from missing school or work.
Most importantly, a breast-fed child is less likely to have health problems like obesity, diabetes and some forms of cancer as an adult. The breast-feeding room is one way to support breast-feeding mothers to make our community healthier. Fresno High should be applauded and is a model for other schools.
