Do your homework before writing

I would support a minimum wage of $8.92 per hour, as Mary Ann Gamegan-Richardson of Clovis has suggested (letter April 10), provided that employers also include the following to all employees: free food while at work, unlimited sick leave, 30 days paid vacation, free health care, free or subsidized housing, a retirement plan with zero employee contribution, guaranteed salary increases every two years, ample promotion opportunities and a clothing allowance.

These are just some of the forms of compensation that our military members receive in addition to their basic pay. I am not implying that being a junior enlisted member of the military is easy; it is not. I am not implying that our military members should not receive substantial increases in pay and compensation; they certainly should.

My point is that writers like Ms. Gamegan-Richardson should really do their homework before attempting to compare things that they really don’t know much about and not make comparisons of apples and oranges.
