Free speech should be polite speech

With regard to Manuel Madrid’s letter (March 19) about Donald Trump’s right to free speech: When our forefathers made that part of our constitutional rights, they didn’t expect people to take it to the extreme and be a rude, disrespectful and downright out- of-control bully!

Trump and everyone else can choose a different way and different words to share thoughts and concerns. Maybe more people would listen with interest.

What has happened to “do unto others as you would have others do unto you”? How about thinking about that before opening our mouths and using our First Amendment rights? I think it’s sad that we are forgetting how to have a difference of opinion and get along at the same time.

What will our kids learn from all this? Which leads me to Andrea Der Manouel’s letter of the same day. It set a positive, respectful example.
