Rich hold grip on Mexico

In response to the March 12 letter, “Mexico should look in the mirror,” the histories of the United States and Mexico are so different there is no comparison. The U.S. has always had some enlightened liberal thinkers as leaders.

Mexico had a thriving civilization when the Spaniards discovered the riches, killed all the leaders they could and enslaved the population.

They used their armies and the power of the church to consolidate their position. Since then the 1 percent have held sway over the country. Even when the peons revolted, it did not take long for the 1 percent to regain power. They were educated, wealthy and knew how to manipulate people.

The poor, ignorant and faithful people kept multiplying – no birth control – until they could not support their families. In the meantime, U.S. companies sent recruiters to Mexico to import cheap labor. The Mexican people in power, the 1 percent, are OK with that because they don’t think they have any responsibility for the poor.

The 1 percent in Mexico is the equivalent of our conservative Republicans. Anyone thinking Donald Trump or any other conservative is concerned about food, shelter and health care is dreaming.
