I have come to the conclusion that Donald Trump is mentally unbalanced. This is bad enough, but what about those he has convinced? Why do they believe in his tactics of fear and hatred?
Some insights: ‘The fanatic ... cannot generate self-assurance out of his individual resources ... but finds it by clinging passionately to whatever support he happens to embrace. The fanatic is not really a stickler to principle. He embraces a cause … because of his desperate need for something to hold onto. (He) can’t be weaned away ... by an appeal to his reason or moral sense.”
Trump can do no wrong despite his crassness and bullying. As Hoffer says, true believers “hunger for the deep assurance that comes from total surrender – it’s not the cause but the dedication and communion with a congregation.” Those who hate Mexicans or fear Muslims will do so no matter what you say to them. Trump knows this.
Those who despise everything Trump stands for must unite to see that he does not become the leader of the U.S.
