Fresnans are kind to the homeless

Teresa Rachel Romero’s letter (Feb. 8) reveals a lot of pain and anger because she does not see all of the amazing charity that goes on in Fresno. All she sees is hypocrisy and do-gooder antics. She suggests that the Poverello House, the Rescue Mission, the mayor and the supervisors are without compassion.

I was gone from Fresno from 1987 through the first part of 2010. I returned to live in Fresno, and I have been amazed at the kindness of the residents, particularly to the homeless. Fresnans are a lot warmer than they were when I left. A lot more kindness, in my opinion.

So I completely disagree with Ms. Romero. Perhaps she was having a bad day. Sometimes I start to feel certain things that are similar, but it doesn’t take me long to see extraordinary charity all around me. You find what you want to see.

It’s good to get away for awhile to return with new eyes. There are so many worse places in California than Fresno. I am probably never leaving, but I will stay and try to make it better.
