The many failures of Fresno continue
Why, in the 21st century, are we still having political discussions like it’s the 1950s? Why has the poverty line become so pronounced in Fresno that the entire nation acknowledges it? Why do the “haves” just take it for granted that they will prevail in all struggles?
I grew up in southwest Fresno when redevelopment was supposed to “rescue” west Fresno. Getting rid of houses that were not up to code, etc. Yes, they did that, as well as wiping out almost all of the businesses and not replacing them with anything. I believe the liquor stores survived intact.
It is this “gap” that forced high school grads of my generation to leave Fresno for better opportunities – they did not see a future for people of color here. That brings us to now: highest poverty rate per capita, Summerset debacle, gun violence, gangs and still a lack of opportunity.
Why, Fresno? When will we get this right? When will we stop rewarding big, well-known names (with bonuses no less) and start supporting Fresno activists who are on the front lines – trying to make this city better for all of us. Why, Fresno? What is your excuse?
