Deaths from guns ‘incidental’

Larry Johnson’s letter (Oct. 15) said guns should be taken away from the public because they kill 12,564 people a year.

He misses the more important point. A disarmed citizenry is at the mercy of the police and military forces of a tyrannical government. Though it is difficult to imagine that our U.S. government could ever become tyrannical, we must remember that governments are run by people, and people are vulnerable to the corruption of power.

A well-armed citizenry is our best guarantee of continued freedom, which is more important than the incidental deaths resulting from gun ownership.
