Shinzen volunteering teaches teens valuable lessons
Volunteerism is one of the richest and most fulfilling experiences a young adult can encounter. Through years of volunteering at a variety of locations, such as the Shinzen Japanese Friendship Gardens in Woodward Park, I have gained countless experiences.
As a member of the Shinzen landscape committee, I have had the opportunity to work with mentors, who taught me how to pull weeds and plant trees. Most importantly they have heightened my awareness of the beauty in nature, as well as instilling patience, teamwork and duty to society. The quiet, tranquil vignettes comprised of koi fish, bonsai, bridges and a tea house have allowed me to revel in nature as a respite from the sometimes fast-paced world of a teenager.
I encourage other youth in the Fresno County area to consider volunteering in our community. The knowledge you receive from seasoned mentors, some who have established lifelong centers of enrichment, will allow you to continue their work so future generations can enjoy these precious landmarks.
The rewards for all are endless.
