Fresno City Council must step up and preserve Fulton artwork
I am responding to Wilma Quan-Schecter and Randall Morrison’s letter Sept. 27 concerning the reconstruction of the Fulton Mall.
They wrote that Fresno is committed to protecting, restoring and re-installing the art on the mall as part of reconstruction.
Yet an addendum to the construction contract was released, and it excludes the guarantee that our beautiful artwork will be restored and reinstalled. The project will be considered complete even if the artwork has not been reinstalled.
Why is Fresno taking our urban park and transforming it into another useless street? With the artwork and a carefully reconstructed mall, this street could be a showplace and destination for all, including our tourists.
The art is being removed and stored. Who will protect this artwork? Will it disappear or be relocated to other locations? What about the landscaping and trees that are dying due to lack of maintenance ?
Who will be the new shoppers in this mall? This is assuming that there will be shoppers, and new businesses locate to the mall.
We need our City Council to step up and create a mall that will be used and not become just another eyesore.
