Interview students when reporting on test scores
Regarding the article “Valley Results on Student Tests Mixed” (Sept. 10): The Common Core state assessments results came back this late summer. The results were mixed. As a high school student, I think that data/graph does not tell the whole picture.
Students at Kingsburg High School were told to take the assessment a few months ago with no incentive. That gives students the students another reason to not care. That is an economic principle. Students were also having a hard transition to the new standards. It is not just the students, but the teachers had a hard transition, too. I feel some districts do not have their teachers trained enough to the new standards.
The article should have also included student interviews, not just the district’s point of view. They did not take the tests. The students did. Have students put their input to the scores.
